Softball Falls to Illinois Wesleyan in Battle of CCIW Unbeatens

The Big Blue softball team matched up against the Titans of Illinois Wesleyan University on Wednesday, April 19 for a battle of College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin unbeaten squads. Millikin fell to the Titans in both matchups, by a 9-15 score in game one then falling 3-4 in game two.

The Titans struck first in game one when Priscilla Peek walked with the bases loaded. Millikin answered in the third inning when a Rylee Blake triple to left field scored Kaylee Goluch and Aundrea Jenkins. Anna Enlow singled down the left field line to plate Emma Lewandowski to tack on another, then an infield single off the bat of Kendallyn Davison scored Leah Foreman. The fifth run of the inning was scored when a Lex Tennison single to right center scored Enlow to put MU up 5-1.

Wesleyan chipped away at the lead in the fourth with a homerun off the bat of Claire Post, but Millikin answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning on a Foreman RBI groundout to maintain the four run advantage.

The Titans would plate four runs in the fifth and eight in the sixth to take a 6-14 lead. Foreman helped lessen the deficit with a double to right center in the sixth that scored Lanie Chizmark and Blake, then Enlow's single to right brought in Foreman.

Illinois Wesleyan tacked on one more run in the top of the seventh, and the Big Blue were held scoreless in the bottom of the inning to fall 9-15.

Blake went 2-for-3 at the plate in the contest with two RBI, and Enlow was 2-for-4 with two RBI.

In game two, it was once again Wesleyan who struck first. During the 2023 season, the Big Blue are 17-4 when they get in the scoring column first, and they are 0-5 when their opponent strikes first. The Titans tallied one in the second, then three in the third on two homeruns.

The Big Blue chipped away in the sixth, starting with a Foreman RBI groundout that plated Blake. Maddy Regan also recorded an RBI groundout that scored Chizmark to bring the score to 2-4.

In the top of the seventh, Zoie Bowman stepped in for a pinch hit at-bat, tripling down the left field line. She later scored on a wild pitch, but Millikin was unable to complete the comeback and fell 3-4.

Regan and Davison each went 2-for-3 at the plate in game two. Addison Sargent struck out seven in the loss and allowed just five hits.

With the losses, the Big Blue move to 19-9 this season, 8-2 in CCIW play. Millikin will shift away from conference play with a home doubleheader against Blackburn College on Saturday, April 22. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
