Softball Sweeps Augustana to Move to 4-0 in CCIW Play

The Big Blue softball team took the field at the Workman Family Softball Field in Decatur, Ill. on Saturday, April 8 for a College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin doubleheader against the Vikings of Augustana College. Millikin took a 9-0 victory in game one in five innings before recording a 6-4 win in game two, complete with a three-run seventh inning to earn a comeback victory.

In game one, the Big Blue got on the board in the bottom of the first when an Anna Enlow single to right field scored Leah Foreman. In the second, Millikin tacked on another when Rylee Blake singled to score Lex Tennison.

The third inning saw the Big Blue post a six-spot to pull ahead by eight runs. Enlow sent a homerun over the right field fence to score two runs as Maddy Regan crossed the plate, then a Kaylee Goluch double to left field scored Tennison. Blake added an RBI groundout to score Aundrea Jenkins, then Lanie Chizmark blasted the second two-run homerun of the inning over the left field fence to score her and Goluch.

In the fourth, pinch hitter Mackenzie Mazzocchi added an RBI groundout to score pinch runner Sarah Lahner, putting Millikin up 9-0.

Enlow and Tennison each went 2-for-2 at the plate in the game one win, with Enlow recording three RBIs.

Aly Armstrong earned the win in the circle in game one to move to 8-2 on the season, striking out eight through 4.0 innings of work and not yielding a hit. Carly Ward contributed an inning of work in the combined no-hitter, striking out one.

In game two as the visitors on the scoreboard, the Big Blue once again got on the board first, scoring in the top of the second when a Goluch single down the right field line scored Tennison. The Vikings had an answer, though, scoring on an RBI single off the bat of Claudia Buchholz to even the score at one run apiece.

Millikin regained the lead in the third when Enlow posted an RBI single to score Foreman, then Kendallyn Davison chipped in an RBI groundout to score Regan.

Augie once again had an answer with Buchholz at the plate when she reached on a sacrifice bunt turned fielder's choice when Ashlyn Mathers beat out the play at home to score. Augustana would take a one-run lead on a two RBI single by Nadia Ranieri with the bases loaded. Charly Warlow entered the game with runners on second and third and two outs, striking out Emily Gad after falling behind in the count 3-0 to end the inning.

Millikin used a seventh inning comeback to grab a 6-3 lead, starting with a Blake bunt single. Foreman sent a double to left field, scoring Blake from first to tie the game. With two outs, Enlow delivered a bloop double down the left field line to score pinch runner Katie Detamore, then Davison helped tack on another with a single to right field that plated Enlow.

The Big Blue took care of business in the bottom of the seventh, picking up two outs on a groundout and a strikeout. Augie made things interesting when Morgan Bielfeldt reached on a Millikin error then Mathers delivered a single up the middle.

Foreman and Goluch each went 2-for-3 at the plate for Millikin.

Warlow earned the win, pitching 3.1 innings for Millikin. She struck out four and yielded just one hit.

Millikin will continue conference play with a four game road trip to the Chicagoland area, first against North Park University on Friday, April 14 then at Wheaton College on Saturday, April 15.
