Millikin Track Competes in Last Chance Meet

Over the weekend, select members of the Men's and Women's Track & Field teams competed at the St. Francis Fighting Chance Invite. This competition offers athletes the chance to earn a trip to the National Championship or earn one final season's best.

The Big Blue started their competitions on Friday through the high jump squad. All-Conference jumpers Nick Fornoff and Glenn Powers tied for 2nd and 4th in the competition. Both cleared a bar of 1.85 meters with Fornoff getting the edge by having fewer overall misses.

Another All-Conference jumper for the Big Blue, Hannah Sago, took 5th place in the women's high jump competition. She leaped a height of 1.51 meters, just shy of her personal best.

In the men's 1500, senior Austin Bridgman ran in a chaotic race to finish 2nd in heat 1. His time of 3:54.48 is within a second of the school record. He will be competing next week at Augustana, going for the record and National Championship berth one last time.

The women's 3000 meter steeplechase saw two Millikin athletes earn personal bests. Quincy Collings cleared the many barriers and water pits in a time of 11:27.09, good for the 2nd best time in school history. Likewise, 5th year Hailey O'Malley finishes her career by running a time of 11:39.37, good for the 3rd best time in school history.

In the men's 5000 meter run, junior Bradyn Olmstead ran a time of 14:59.33, his 2nd time covering the distance in under 15 minutes. He will also compete next week at the Augustana Last Chance Meet.

On the 2nd day of competition, several men competed in the 800 meter run. All-American Jake Shumaker took 2nd, running a time of 1:52.32. He currently sits on the fringe of qualifying for the championship and will compete again to sure up his spot at Augustana. Sophomores Brandon Mattsey and Christian Skaggs also ran the 800, earning PRs along the way. Mattsey finished with a time of 1:57.49 while Skaggs ran a time of 1:59.61.

Last but not least, the Big Blue saw another school record improved upon this season, this time in the women's pole vault. Hailey Newill, who has battled recent shoulder surgery and back pains all season, cleared a bar of 3.26 meters. That clearance is better than the previous record by about 4 inches.

Several of the athletes mentioned above, as well as more member of the sprint squad will compete on Thursday May 18th at Augustana.
