Foreman and Goluch Blast Two HRs Apiece as Big Blue Softball Sweeps Firebirds

The Big Blue softball team traveled to Kenosha, Wis. on Wednesday, May 3 for a rescheduled College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin matchup against the Firebirds of Carthage College. Millikin swept Carthage, winning game two in comeback fashion after trailing by five runs in game two, to move to 10-2 in conference play.

In game one, the Big Blue got on the board first when Leah Foreman sent her first homerun of two on the day over the left field fence, plating herself and Lanie Chizmark. The Firebirds put up three runs of their own between the first and second innings to take a one run lead.

An Anna Enlow single in the top of the third inning plated Chizmark for the second time on the afternoon, then a single off the bat of Kaylee Goluch helped score Morgan Boward, crossing the plate on a Firebird error to knot the game at four runs apiece.

In the sixth, Goluch would blast her first homerun of two to score herself and Aundrea Jenkins, pushing the Big Blue lead to 6-4. In the seventh, a Brynn McNeill single to shortstop scored Foreman to seal the 7-4 victory.

Jenkins went 3-for-3 at the plate, and Goluch was 2-for3 with three RBI.

Armstrong earned the complete game victory in game one, striking out six.

In game two, the Firebirds jumped out to an early lead, scoring two runs in the second inning and three in the fourth to put MU down five runs.

In the bottom of the fourth, Millikin's bats awoke as they batted around, starting with a Kendallyn Davison single to start the inning. Lex Tennison walked, then Jenkins reached on an error to pack the sacks. Goluch delivered an RBI groundout to plate Davison, then the second RBI groundout of the inning came off the bat of Chizmark, scoring the pinch runner Chloe Book. Foreman then sent a single to left field to score two, bringing the Big Blue within one run. A Maddy Regan single to right tied the game at five apiece. Pinch runner Jada Wilson scored to put MU on top on the third consecutive MU single, this one off the bat of Enlow.

Goluch's second homerun of the day came in the fifth, this time to center. Foreman followed suit with her second of the day, also scoring Chizmark and Blake to increase the Millikin lead to 10-5.

In the sixth, the Firebirds would plate two, but MU came away with the 10-7 win.

Rylee Blake went 3-for-4 at the plate in the leadoff slot, and Goluch went 2-for-3.

Charly Warlow picked up the victory, pitching 3.2 innings and allowing just two hits and striking out three. Addison Sargent pitched 3.1 innings, allowing just three Firebird hits.

Millikin will continue their 2023 CCIW campaign in Wisconsin on Thursday, May 4 when they head to Waukesha to match up against the Pioneers of Carroll University.
