Millikin Softball Squeaks out Two Close Victories over Carroll

The Millikin softball team continued their Wisconsin road trip on Thursday, May 4 in Waukesha, Wis. against the Pioneers of Carroll University. With both games of the doubleheader decided by just one run, the Big Blue walked away with a 2-0 record on the day, 4-0 on the trip to the north.

In the first game of the day, it took ten innings to decide the victor. Millikin stranded five baserunners in the first seven innings, and they ended the third inning with a runner thrown out at the plate trying to advance from second to home on a single off the bat of Leah Foreman.

The tenth inning saw Rylee Blake reach on a single, then Lanie Chizmark laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Blake to third base. Foreman was issued a walk to put on a second baserunner, but one run was all that was needed for the Big Blue with Blake scoring on a wild pitch.

The Pioneers notched two singles in the top of the tenth, but Millikin recorded the final three outs on a groundout, a flyout, and a strikeout to top the Pioneers 1-0.

The Big Blue outhit Carroll 10-5 with Foreman going 2-for-5 and Blake going 2-for-4.

Aly Armstrong recorded her 13th win of the season in the circle, going the distance in all 10.0 innings. Armstrong struck out 12, allowing only five hits. Grace Bradley took the loss for the Pioneers.

In game two, Aundrea Jenkins helped plate the first run in the bottom of the second when she delivered an RBI single up the middle that plated Lex Tennison and Kendallyn Davison. Kaylee Goluch tallied an RBI that scored Jenkins with a single through the right side, giving MU a 3-0 advantage.

Carroll rallied in the third, scoring three runs of their own to tie the game.

Millikin responded in the fifth, starting with a Chizmark double to left center. Foreman's flyout helped advance her to third, then Maddy Regan set down a sacrifice bunt to give MU a 4-3 lead.

Kelsey Bruno started the game for the Big Blue, allowing one hit. Charly Warlow picked up the win in relief, tossing 5.0 innings and allowing just two Pioneer hits.

Chizmark and Davison each went 2-for-3 at the plate for Millikin in game two.

With the sweep, Millikin remains in a first place tie with the Titans of Illinois Wesleyan in the CCIW, moving to 25-9 overall, 12-2 in College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin play. The Big Blue will round out their CCIW campaign at the Workman Family Softball Field on Saturday, May 6 with a doubleheader against Elmhurst University. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
