Millikin Baseball Sweeps North Park in Walk-Off Fashion

The Millikin baseball team swept a key College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) doubleheader over North Park University on May 6 at the Workman Family Baseball Field in Decatur. The start of game one was delayed two hours by weather and game two had a delay of over one hour after the first inning.
 
After winning game one 16-4, the Big Blue completed the with a two-run homerun from Andy Niebrugge to give Millikin a 7-6 victory. The win improves Millikin to 25-15 overall and 11-7 in the CCIW. The Big Blue finished third in the conference regular season race. As the three seed, Millikin will face the four seed North Park on Wednesday, May 10 at Augustana College in Rock Island. The Big Blue will play in the third game on Wednesday with the starting time to be announced.
 
The victory was a historic win for Millikin Head Coach Brandon Townsend who tied Galen Woods (1974-1989) as the winningest baseball coach in school history with 192 wins.
 
The offense ruled game one with the Big Blue scoring 16 runs on 16 hits and seven walks. Tommy Shaw led the way going 4-4 with a double scoring three runs and driving home two. Kyle Gibson was 3-4 with a double and a triple. Gibson scored four runs and drove in two. Freshman Cayden Silvester was 3-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Catcher Ryan Janssen had two hits including a home run with two runs scored and two RBI. Andy Niebrugge added two hits and Sam Bushur had a hit with two RBI.
 
Drew Sutton was the winning pitcher in relief throwing four scoreless innings allowing only one hit while striking out four.
 
Reece Arakaki, Alex Divito and Jim Zay each had two hits for North Park.
 
North Park scored four runs in the third inning to open a 4-0. Millikin scored single runs in the third and fifth and then took a 5-4 lead with a three run seventh inning. Niebrugge had a run scoring double and Shaw drove home two with a double to give the Big Blue the lead.
 
The Vikings took the lead with two runs in the top of the ninth. In the bottom of the ninth, Bushur drew a one out walk setting the stage for Niebrugge's game winning blast. Niebrugge had three hits in the game with Shaw collecting two.
 
Nathan Somerfield had two hits for the Vikings. North Park is now 15-25, 9-9.
