Women's Volleyball Wins Two on Opening Day of Home Tournament

The Big Blue women's volleyball team took the court at the Griswold Center in Decatur, Ill. for matchups with Illinois College and Hanover on the opening day of their annual home tournament on Friday, September 22. Millikin downed Illinois College in sweeping fashion before defeating Hanover in four sets. 

Against Illinois College (25-11, 25-17, 25-10), Addison Oyer and Delaney Higgins led the way in kills with eight apiece. Kailee Itzenhuiser notched five service aces. Sophia Gibbs, Oyer, and Emma Taylor each tallied two total blocks. Gracie Shaffer recorded 16 set assists, and Sophia Howell topped the digs column with 17. 

The Big Blue outkilled the Lady Blues 40-28, recording a team attacking percentage of .370. Paige Knuffman was the kills leader for Illinois College with seven. 

In their second matchup of the day, Millikin squeaked out a 26-24 win over the Panthers in the first set before taking a dominant 25-10 win in the second frame. Hanover rallied to take the third set 21-25, but Millikin bounced back to take the fourth and final set 25-15. 

Itzenhuiser was credited with 16 kills, and Oyer added 10. Shaffer notched four service aces. Kyra Carothers was the blocks leader with four, and Howell was once again the digs leader with 23 while Itzenhuiesr added 19. Shaffer was the top assister with 26, and Alyssa Frederking added 25. 

CC Shick notched eight kills for Hanover. Millikin outkilled the Panthers 55-35. In the second set, they tallied a team attacking percentage of .324. 

Millikin will return to their home floor on Saturday, September 23 for the second day of the Millikin Invitational where they will meet Capital University and Fontbonne University.
