Millikin's Howell named CCIW Defensive Player of the Week

NAPERVILLE – Carthage teammates Liv Carel (hitter) and Devinn Bell (setter) joined Millikin's Sophia Howell (defensive) as College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Student-Athletes of the Week in women's volleyball, according to a Monday afternoon announcement from the league office.

Hitter: Liv Carel, Carthage
Carel, a junior right-side hitter from St. Michael, Minn., led the Firebirds' offense to four victories last week, including a five-set triumph over 14th-ranked Cornell on Friday. Carel averaged 3.5 kills with a .300 hitting percentage over 14 games played. She was responsible for 14.5 points in the Firebirds' win over Cornell and attacked a .476 clip in Carthage's Saturday triumph over Wartburg.

Setter: Devinn Bell, Carthage
Bell averaged 5.86 assists for the Firebirds in their perfect week. She also pitched in with 1.14 digs and 0.57 service aces on average, helping Carthage put up a team hitting percentage of .244 across four matches. The Lindenhurst, Ill. native set season highs in the win over Cornell with 25 assists and four aces.

Defensive: Sophia Howell, Millikin
Millikin was a perfect 5-0 last week led by Howell's performance on the back line. The junior libero didn't commit a reception error while totaling 95 digs, including a season-best 25 in a four-set victory over Fontbonne on Sunday in Decatur. The St. Louis native also contributed 13 service aces, six of which came in the Big Blue's CCIW win over Carroll on Wednesday.
