McFarlane's Late Game Heroics Lift Men's Soccer over Titans

The Big Blue men's soccer team took the field on Wednesday, October 30 for their final regular season matchup of the 2024 season against the Titans of Illinois Wesleyan. Having already clinched a place in the 2024 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Tournament, they needed to win in order to earn a hosting seed.

The Titans got on the board first when Elsworth McIntosh scored on a rebound goal, picking up Joey Rodino's shot that nearly missed off the right goalpost in the eighth minute.

Down one, it took one minute of second half play for Olav Kaldahl to tie things up at one apiece. But, in the 54th minute, Ben Lyons' goal assisted by McIntosh gave Illinois Wesleyan the lead.

In the 58th minute, Nacho Diaz found the back of the net to even the score at 2-2. After 40 scoreless minutes of play, Michael McFarlane got a breakaway opportunity with under :40 to go on the game clock. After a brief change of speed, McFarlane scored the game winner with just 29.6 seconds left on the clock.

Millikin was outshot in the contest 12-14. Oliwier Holowinski played all 90 minutes in goal, recording five saves.

With the win, the Big Blue improved to 4-3-1 in conference play, 10-5-1 overall. After making the CCIW Tournament for the first time since 2014, Millikin secured the #4 seed with the win and hosting duties in the opening round. Men's soccer will host fifth-seeded North Central College on Saturday, November 2 with kickoff scheduled for 12:00 PM from Frank M. Lindsay Field.
