Millikin Women’s Basketball Wins Overtime Thriller

The Millikin women's basketball team opened the 2024-25 season with a thrilling come-from-behind 86-80 overtime over Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology on November 11 at the Griswold Center in Decatur, Illinois.
 
The fourth quarter comeback gave new Millikin Head Coach Kirsten Hammer her first collegiate coaching victory.
 
Rose-Hulman led 20-13 at the end of the first quarter and Millikin trailed 39-28 at halftime. The Fightin Engineers 59-43 after three quarters. The Big Blue outscored Rose-Hulman 31-15 in the fourth quarter with the game tied at the end of regulation 74-74.
 
After struggling from the field in the first three quarters, Millikin shot 12-17 (70.6 percent) from the field in the fourth quarter including making 4-9 from three point range. Rose-Hulman was just 4-11 from the field in the final quarter.
 
Millikin chipped away at the lead for the entire fourth quarter and pulled to within four at 67-63 on a three-pointer by Emily White. After Jamie Baum answered with a basket for Rose-Hulman, the Big Blue's Christina Rice made it a 69-65 game with three minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.
Rose-Hulman pushed the advantage back out to six points, but White's jumper and free throw pulled Millikin to within three at 72-69 with 1:20 left in the game.  Julia Meyer gave Rose-Hulman a five point advantage with one minute remaining in regulation. Emily Brenneisen's three made it 74-72 with 44 second to go. White then drew a charge on the defensive end and hit the game tying basket with 12 seconds remaining. White scored 13 points in the fourth quarter.
 
With the game tied at 77-77 in overtime, sophomore transfer Tatum Young hit a three-pointer to give Millikin an 80-77 advantage. Young would pull down a big defensive rebound and hit three free throws in the final seconds to secure the win.
 
White finished with 23 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Rice added 18 points and eight rebounds. Matayia Tellis had a double double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Kyleigh Block scored 12 points, Young with 11 and Brenneisen with nine.
 
Baum led Rose-Hulman with 27 points and seven rebounds. Sophia Reese added 16.
