Men's Basketball Wins CCIW Opener at North Central

The Millikin men's basketball team opened their 2024-25 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin campaign at North Central College in Naperville, Ill. on Wednesday, December 4 with a win against the Cardinals.

In the 73-67 victory, the Big Blue shot 51.1% from the field on 23-of-45 shooting, including going 7-for-15 from three point land. Lane Thomann was the leading scorer with 14 points. JT Welch added 12, and a three pack of Big Blue each chipped in 10 apiece in DeMarcus Bond, Chase Travis, and Tionne Spates. Drake Stevenson was the leading rebounder with eight.

Sean Molloy was the leading scorer for the Cardinals with 17 points, and Terrance Moncrief added 16.

Down one with 1:32 remaining in the first half, the Big Blue hit three straight three pointers to take an eight point lead heading into the halftime break, first from Travis and then back-to-back makes from Stevenson.

The Big Blue held the lead despite North Central's best efforts into the second half, extending it to 10 points on a pair of free throws by Thomann with just under ten minutes to go in the game then 12 on a layup by Spates with eight minutes remaining. A three off the hand of JT Welch gave Millikin their largest lead in the game of 16 with 5:35 left to tick, and the Big Blue never looked back. A three by Moncrief with three seconds remaining cut the deficit to four and threatened the Big Blue, but a pair of free throws by Thomann sealed the opening CCIW win.

The Big Blue will meet their second CCIW opponent of the season on Saturday, December 7 when they travel to Chicago, Ill. to meet North Park University for a 4:15 PM tipoff.
