Softball Sweeps Hope in 2024 Home Opening Doubleheader

The Big Blue softball team matched up against Hope College in their home opening doubleheader of the 2024 season at the Workman Family Softball Field on Friday, March 1. Millikin needed only five innings to get the game one victory, winning 9-1, then took game two by the slim margin of 4-3.

In game one, Hope got on the board first in the top of the first when Kate DeMann's single up the middle plated Sydney Zombo.

The Big Blue evened the score in the bottom of the first, taking advantage of confusion on a non-dropped third strike situation with the bases loaded and one out, with Kendallyn Davison crossing the plate.

In the fourth, Millikin put up five runs on six hits, with Lanie Chizmark crossing the plate first on a wild pitch. Chloe Book singled down the left field line to bring in Emily Kobel, then a Davison single up the middle brought Book home. A Maddy Regan triple scored both Davison and Rylee Blake.

With the eight-run rule looming in the top of the fifth, Millikin scored three runs, first on a Blake infield single that scored Anna Enlow, then Blake and Kobel crossed the plate giving Davison two more RBIs in game one.

Charly Warlow picked up the victory in the circle, allowing just one run, six hits, and striking out one through five innings pitched.

Blake and Davison each went 3-for-4 at the plate.

In game two, the Big Blue used their power at the plate for the first three runs. Regan blasted a home run to left field, scoring both herself and Blake.

Hope scored one run in the second, then two in the third to take a one run lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, it was designated hitter Kailyn Coates who hit a solo homerun to left center to tie the game at three runs apiece. Later in the fourth with two outs and runners on first and third, the Big Blue sent Book from first to steal second, and when Hope threw down, freshman Ava Zukowski stole home to give MU the 4-3 lead.

Carly Ward started the game in the circle, striking out one and allowing four hits through 3.` innings pitched. Freshman Megan Walker was the winning pitcher, pitching 3.2 innings, allowing two hits, and striking out three.

Coates and Zukowski each went 2-for-3 from the plate.

The Big Blue will be back at the Workman Family Softball Field on Saturday, March 2 when they meet the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire at 2:00 PM and Coe College at 7:00 PM.
