Softball Avenges Loss to Grinnell, Falls to DePauw

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Big Blue softball team took the field at the Workman Family Softball Field for the final day of the Millikin Invitational on Sunday, March 10 with matchups scheduled with Grinnell and DePauw. 

The Big Blue avenged their loss to Grinnell yesterday, winning 10-9 with a walkoff win in the bottom of the seventh. Grinnell got on the board first with a run in the top of the first, then the Big Blue matched it in the bottom of the inning on an RBI groundout off the bat of Maddy Regan

Grinnell scored two more in the second, and Millikin chipped away at the deficit when Rylee Blake's RBI single scored Emily Kobel. Grinnell added four more runs in the third to take a 7-2 lead.

Millikin posted a five-run fourth, batting around, starting with Emma Lewandowski scoring on a ground-rule double by Anna Enlow, who later scored the second run of the inning on a wild pitch. Kobel also later crossed the plate on a wild pitch, then Katlyn Schraeder scored on an RBI groundout by Kendallyn Davison. Blake scored the final run of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Leah Foreman

Grinnell scored two in the top of the seventh on a two RBI double by Samantha Chu. 

In the bottom of the seventh, Kobel was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score the pinch runner Charley Condill. A walk issued to Schraeder scored Lewandowski, then Enlow scored on a wild pitch to end the game with a 10-9 victory. 

Blake and Lewandowski each went 2-for-3 at the plate in the win. Charly Warlow picked up the win, striking out eight tossing the full seven innings.

Against DePauw, the Tigers scored first in the first when Goose Moore crossed the plate on a wild pitch. 

The Big Blue matched it in the top of the seventh as the visitors on the scoreboard when Ava Zukowski singled to center to score Kailyn Coates.

The score remained tied at one apiece until the fifth inning when DePauw scored two runs on a single by Ashtyn Barnett. 

Millikin chipped away at the deficit in the top of the sixth when a sacrifice bunt by Coates scored Condill. 

DePauw added another run to go up two heading into the top of the seventh. The Big Blue scored when Foreman was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring Lanie Chizmark, then a foul out off the bat of Regan scored Blake.

DePauw secured the walkoff win when Kelsey Bernhard scored on an RBI single by Moore in the bottom of the inning to down Millikin 4-5.

Zukowski went 2-for-3 at the plate for Millikin. Kelsey Bruno struck out three through 6.1 innings of work, but suffered her first loss of the season.

Millikin softball will head down to the Orlando, Fla. area for THE Spring Games starting next week.
