Millikin Splits Twin Bill to Win Series over Hope

The Millikin baseball team split Saturday's doubleheader against Hope College on March 23 at the Workman Family Baseball Field in Decatur, Illinois. Millikin lost game one 5-1 but won the second game 5-4 to take two out of three in the weekend series.
 
Trailing 1-0 in game one, Hope score four runs in the seventh to secure the win. Nolan Gardner had a two-run single in the inning with Brenden Collins and Al Money each adding a sacrifice fly. Money would have a run scoring single in ninth to make it a 5-1 game. Gardner and Money each had two hits in the game.
 
Tommy Shaw accounted for Millikin's only run with a home run. In game two of the doubleheader, Shaw set a new Millikin record for games played in a career with 151. Shaw has started all 151 games.
 
Mason Belmore was the winning pitcher for Hope throwing seven and one-third innings. Ian Sanders picked up the save.
 
Millikin's game one starter Drew Detmers pitched well. He threw six shutout innings before running into trouble in the seventh. Detmers finished with seven innings allowing five hits and four earned runs while striking out six.
 
Millikin won game two in walk off finish. Andy Niebrugge opened the ninth with a triple. Pitch runner Danny Lack scored the winning run on a single from Kyle Gibson.
 
The game was a back-and-forth contest with Hope scoring single runs in the first, third, sixth and eighth. Millikin scored a single run in the first, fifth, sixth, seventh and the game winner in the ninth.
 
Tyler Gade went 1-2 for Millikin with a home run. He walked three times and scored twice. Gibson and Niebrugge each had two hits for Millikin.
 
Owen Krizman led Hope going 2-3 with a double and a home run and driving in two. Charlie Saul also had two hits for Hope.
 
Nash Mose was the winning pitcher in relief for Millikin. He threw one perfect inning striking out one.
 
Millikin is now 9-9 while Hope goes to 6-9.
 
Millikin opens College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play on March 26 at Illinois Wesleyan University.
