Softball Drops Pair of Games on Second Home Tournament Weekend

The Big Blue softball team took the field at The Workman for two games on their second weekend of the Millikin Invitational Tournament with matchups against Grinnell College and the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Saturday, March 9.

In game one, Grinnell got on the scoreboard first when Samantha Chu singled to right field to score Hannah Dykstra in the second inning. Chu later crossed the plate along with Kathryn Vermeulen when Kambria Anson tripled to right center to give the Pioneers a three run advantage.

Kendallyn Davison helped chip away at the deficit in the third with a triple to right center that scored Rylee Blake. In the seventh, down to their last three outs, Anna Enlow grounded out to score the pinch runner Charley Condill. The second RBI groundout of the inning came off the bat of Emily Kobel to tie the game when Lanie Chizmark crossed the plate.

In the international tiebreaker inning, the Big Blue failed to score, then a Chu single to left field in the bottom of the inning scored Taylor Durak.

Blake went 2-for-3 at the plate in game one. Kelsey Bruno pitched 5.0 innings, striking out nine and allowing just four hits. Carly Ward took the loss in the 3-4 game in her 2.2 innings of relief, allowing just one hit and striking out three.

In game two, UWSP got off to a hot start, scoring two runs in the first inning then another in the second.

The Big Blue scored their lone run of the game on a sacrifice bunt by Chizmark that scored Condill.

The pointers tacked on two more to defeat the Big Blue 1-5. Blake went 2-for-4 at the plate.

Millikin will be back in action on Sunday, March 10 for a rematch against Grinnell and a matchup with DePauw.
