Millikin Baseball Splits with North Park

The Millikin baseball team split a doubleheader with North Park University on April 13 at the Workman Family Baseball Field in Decatur, Illinois. The twin bill featured the top two teams in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) standings with the Big Blue winning game one 5-1 and North Park rallying in the ninth inning to win game two 4-3.
 
Millikin celebrated Senior Day honor 15 seniors who have left their mark on the Big Blue program over the last four years. The game one victory marked the 100 victory over the last four years for the program.
 
Big Blue graduate student Caleb Buehrle was the story of game one earning his sixth victory of the year and setting a new Millikin record for strikeouts in a career at 267. Buehrle broke the record of 260 set by Al "Boots" Budde that was set back in the 1940s. Buehrle threw seven innings allowing one earned run on four hits while tying his career high for strikeouts in a game at 12. Senior Sean Shook earned his fourth save of the season throwing the final two shutout innings allowing one hit while striking out two.
 
Millikin took the lead with two runs in the third. Sam Bushur had a run scoring groundout followed by RBI single from Hayden Stork. Millikin scored twice in the sixth on an RBI single from Kameron Ross and a run scoring double from Kyle Gibson. Gibson added an RBI single in the eighth.
North Park's run game in the seventh on an RBI single from Carlos Martinez. 
 
Gibson, Ryan Janssen, Stork, Ross and Gade each had two hits for the Big Blue.
 
Justin Swanson and Reece Arakaki had two hits for North Park.
 
Millikin got another stellar start from senior pitcher Drew Detmers in game two. Detmers through seven inning allowing seven hits and one run with seven strikeouts.
 
The game was tied 1-1 heading to the bottom of the sixth. Millikin pushed across a run on a Janssen single to go up 2-1. The Big Blue added an insurance run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly from Janssen.
 
North Park put together a three run rally in the top of the ninth. Garrett Bragg had a two-run double to make it a 3-2 game and later in the inning Swanson delivered a game winning two run triple.
 
Bobby Bartlett went 4-4 for North Park.
 
Millikin is now 16-11, 7-2 and North Park goes to 18-8, 7-1 holding on to first place. The two teams will play on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Chicago.
