Softball's Offensive Explosion Leads to Sweep of Wheaton

The Big Blue softball team took the field at the Workman Family Softball Field for their first home College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin doubleheader of the 2024 season against Wheaton College on Saturday, April 13. Millikin won the first game 6-3 before taking game two 12-1 in five innings to move to 4-2 in CCIW play.

In game one, the Big Blue got on the board first when Ava Zukowski singled to left, plating Katlyn Schraeder in the second inning. A Rylee Blake bunt single scored both Lanie Chizmark and Ava Zukowski, then a Wheaton throwing error allowed Blake to cross the plate as well. Leah Foreman's ground-rule double to left center tacked on the fifth run of the inning when Anna Enlow crossed the plate.

Wheaton added three runs of their own between the fourth and fifth innings, but Millikin added another in the bottom of the sixth with an Enlow triple to right that scored Emma Lewandowski.

Enlow and Lewandowski each went 2-for-3 from the plate in game one. Charly Warlow was victorious in the circle, tossing a full 7.0 innings, striking out one and allowing five hits.

In game two, the Big Blue scored four runs in the top of the first inning as the visitors on the scoreboard. Enlow's single through the right side scored Blake, then a Schraeder single up the middle scored Enlow. Zukowski's double to left field plated Maddy Regan, and the final run was scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Abby Willis that scored Schraeder.

The second inning saw Millikin add another five runs as they batted around, starting with Foreman reaching on a bases loaded fielders choice to score Lewandowski. Regan singled to center to score Enlow, then a single through the right side from Zukowski allowed the runners to move from station to station and score Foreman. The final two runs of the inning came on a two-RBI single by Chizmark to score Zukowski and Schraeder.

Three more runs pushed the Millikin lead to 12-0 in the third, starting with a Schraeder single up the middle that plated Enlow and Blake. Then, an Emily Kobel sacrifice fly scored Ann Marie Meek

Wheaton added a run in the bottom of the fifth, but it wasn't enough to extend the game.

Blake, Enlow, Regan, Schraeder, and Zukowski each went 2-for-2 at the plate. Kelsey Tinder and Charley Condill each entered the game for an at-bat and went 1-for-1.

Kelsey Bruno struck out four through 3.0 innings pitched, allowing just one hit. Carly Ward and Abby Wilken each pitched an inning in relief.

The Big Blue will be back in action on Saturday, April 20 when they travel to Naperville, Ill. for a twin bill against North Central College.
