Softball Bounces Back with Sweep of Elmhurst

After suffering their first doubleheader sweep of the 2024 season at North Central on Saturday, the Big Blue softball team bounced back at Elmhurst on Sunday, April 21 with a doubleheader sweep of the Bluejays.

In game one, it took small ball in the third inning with Rylee Blake reaching on a bunt single. Blake stole second then advanced to third when the ball skipped away from the Elmhurst centerfielder. Emma Lewandowski laid down a squeeze bunt to plate Blake and reach on the fielder's choice. The singluar run proved to be enough as the Big Blue took game one in a 1-0 contest.

Lewandowski and Katlyn Schraeder each went 2-for-3 at the plate. Charly Warlow was the winning pitcher, going the distance through seven innings, striking out one and allowing just five hits in the shutout.

In game two, the Big Blue got on the board first once again, scoring on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Maddy Regan that plated Blake in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead.

Elmhurst took the lead in the top of the second inning, scratching across two runs on two bases loaded walks.

Millikin tied things up in the third with a Leah Foreman bunt single that scored Blake. Then, in the fourth it was an Emily Kobel sacrifice bunt that scored Kendallyn Davison. The Big Blue put up another insurance run in the fifth on a Regan double to left field that scored pinch runner Charley Condill.

Kelsey Bruno pitched 1.1 innings for the Big Blue, striking out three. Carly Ward tossed 5.2 innings in relief to pick up the win, allowing just one hit and striking out three.

With the sweep, the Big Blue move to 6-4 in College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin play, 18-12 overall. Millikin will have another two-doubleheader weekend on April 27 and 28 when they face a pair of Wisconsin squads, Carthage on Saturday and Carroll Sunday.
