Softball Splits with Carthage in First Doubleheader of Weekend

The Big Blue softball team took the field for their NFCA Strikeout Cancer games on Saturday, April 27 against Carthage College. Millikin cruised to a game one win in five innings before falling in game two in ten innings.

In game one, Leah Foreman's first inning single through the left side plated the first run with Rylee Blake. Katlyn Schraeder doubled down the left field line to score Foreman later in the inning to give the Big Blue a 2-0 advantage. In the third, when Maddy Regan reached on an error, Blake scored her second run of the game. Ava Zukowski's single through the right side scored Foreman. A fielder's choice RBI off the bat of Kendallyn Davison scored Regan, then Chizmark's single down the right field line to score Zukowski. The fifth run of the third inning to give MU a 7-0 lead scored on a double steal when Lanie Chizmark stole second and Davison stole home. Enlow's single to right center helped seal the eight run advantage.

In the 8-0 win, Foreman was 1-for-1 at the plate and Katlyn Schraeder was 2-for-3. Charly Warlow picked up the win in the circle, tossing the full 5.0 and allowing just three hits, one walk, and striking out three.

In game two, the Big Blue scored first when Foreman reached on a fielder's choice that plated Blake. A Lanie Chizmark homerun in the second inning put MU up 2-0. They put up another single run in the third inning when Regan's double to left center scored the pinch runner Sarah Lahner.

Carthage battled back, scoring a run of their own in the third then a two RBI double off the bat of Kelly Gaiser plated two to tie the game in the fifth. After a multitude of scoreless innings, Hana Adler's single down the right field line in the tenth scored Clare Rettler and Millikin fell 3-4.

Emma Lewandowski was 2-for-4 at the plate in game two. Kelsey Bruno pitched 5.0 innings, striking out four. Carly Ward took the loss, striking out two and allowing just two hits.

The Big Blue will be back at the Workman Family Softball Field on Sunday, April 28 for a doubleheader against Carroll University with games beginning at 1:00 and 3:00 PM.
