Men's Golf Wins Highland Classic for Second Year in a Row

The Big Blue Men's golf team opened their season at the Highland Classic, hosted by Augustana College, with high expectations after winning the tournament last year with the tournament taking place in Rock Island, Ill. over September 1-2, 2024. The first round saw the team post a 6 over par 294, placing them in a tie for 3rd place. However, the team turned things around in the final round, shooting an impressive 12 under par 276, tying for the 2nd lowest team round in program history to win the Highland Classic for the second consecutive season. Their two-day total of 580 (-6) also tied for 2nd place in the program's 36-hole all-time scoring record.

Individually, Virgile Gruny led the way with a stellar performance, shooting 71-67 (-6) to finish in 2nd place overall. This 36-hole score ties him for 2nd all-time in the team's record books. Last year's tournament medalist, Jack Bollinger, shot 74-69 to tie for 8th place alongside teammate Luke Bradley, who posted rounds of 71-70 for a 1 under par total. Freshman Trevor Biggerstaff made a successful varsity debut, finishing in the top 20 with a score of 76-70, while sophomore Jake Krstulovich also secured a top 20 finish with a 1 over par total of 75-70.

The team's performance at the Highland Classic has set a strong tone for the rest of the season, showcasing both seasoned leadership and emerging talent.

The Big Blue men's golf team will travel to Bloomington, Ill. on Thursday, September 5 to take on Illinois Wesleyan in the Battle for Route 51.
