Millikin Falls in Tight Homecoming Contest

The Millikin University football lost a close contest to Augustana College 24-20 on September 28 in front of a large Homecoming crowd at Frank M. Lindsay Field in Decatur, Illinois.
 
Augustana took an early first quarter lead on a four-yard run by Mike DiGioia to go up 7-0.
 
Millikin answered with two straight touchdowns. Matt Salazar scored on a 12 yard run to make it 7-6 with 3:56 left in the first quarter. The Big Blue went up 13-7 in the early seconds of the second quarter on an Aidan Lombardo pass to Salazar covering 14 yards.
 
A Joren Klem field goal cut Millikin's lead to 13-10 late in the second quarter.
 
DiGioia scored on a 20 yard run the third quarter to put Augustana back in front 17-13.
 
On its first drive of the fourth quarter Millikin marched the ball down to the Vikings one yard line but were stopped on downs. On Augustana's first play, DiGioia bobble the ball in the endzone and the Big Blue's Wasiu Lawal made the recovery for the touchdown and the 20-17 Big Blue advantage.
 
Breyden Smith scored the winning touchdown for the Vikings with 4:22 left in the game on a 52-yard punt return.
 
Lombardo was 18-38-2 passing for 218 yards. Chord Miller led the Millikin receivers with four catches for 82 yards.
 
DiGioia led the Vikings offense with 100 yards rushing on 22 carries with two touchdowns.
 
Millikin outgained the Vikings in total offense with 291 yards to 246.
 
Alex Araiza led the Millikin defense with 10 tackles including two tackles for a loss along with two pass-breakups and a quarterback hurry. Latrell Hannon had an interception for the Big Blue.
 
Dylan Burton led Augustana with 11 tackles.
 
Augustana improves to 2-1, 1-1 while Millikin falls to 0-3, 0-2.
