Big Blue Football Drops Season Opener

The Millikin football team dropped its 2024 season opener to Illinois College 46-21 on September 7 at Frank M. Lindsay Field in Decatur, Illinois.
 
Illinois College jumped out to a 19-0 advantage early in the second quarter before Millikin battle back in the game. Blueboys quarterback Destin Chance had three touchdown passes in the first period to get the Illinois College offense rolling.
 
Millikin got on the board when Erza Burtis recovered a muffed punt in the end zone to make it a 19-7 game. After Chance connected with his All-American wide receiver Collin Brunstein for a second time, it was 26-7 Illinois College led.
 
Big Blue quarterback Aidan Lombardo connected with Javieon Wallace on a 16-yard touchdown pass to make it a 26-14 game just before halftime.
Wallace would catch his second touchdown pass of the day this time from Ethan Smith for Millikin's final score of the game. Don Starling had five catches for 71 yards to lead Millikin in receiving yardage.
 
Chance threw for 341 yards and seven touchdowns to pace the Illinois College offense. Tanner Spencer rushed for 180 yards on 30 carries. Trey Birdsong had eight catches for 118 yards.
 
Illinois College had 567 yards in total offense compared to 233 yards for Millikin. The teams combined for 29 penalties in the game.
 
Wasiu Lawal led the Millikin defense with nine tackles. Alex Araiza had six stops and one interception.
 
Ethan Billingsley had two interceptions for Illinois College.
