Millikin Women’s Basketball Scores Road Upset

The Millikin women's basketball team continues to save its best basketball for College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) action scoring a road upset at Carthage College 55-52 on Jan. 11 in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The Big Blue are now 4-10 overall and 3-2 in conference play. Carthage falls to 11-3, 3-2.
 
Millikin led 42-38 at the end of the third quarter with Firebirds rallying in the fourth to tie game.
The fourth quarter would feature three ties with each team holding a temporary advantage. Millikin freshman Nikkel Johnson tied the game at 50-50 with 1:33 left to play. Emma Thistle would hit two free throws at 1:17 mark to give Carthage a two-point advantage. Millikin would take the lead for good with 55 seconds to play on a three-pointer from Emily Brenneisen. Brenneisen would hit to free throws with 16 seconds left for the final 55-52 margin.
 
Millikin led 18-12 after the first quarter, but Carthage took a 32-30 lead at halftime.
 
Brenneisen led Millikin with 17 points followed by Johnson with 10 points and seven rebounds.
Matayia Tellis added eight points with seven rebounds. Emily White had eight points and five rebounds.
 
Marianna Morissey led Carthage with 12 points followed by Alyssa Orozco with 11.
 
Millikin shot 37 percent (18-49) from the field and made 6-22 from three-point range. The Big Blue were 13-17 from the free throw line. Carthage shot 34 percent (17-50) making 6-17 from three-point range. The Firebirds made 12-18 from the free throw line. Millikin outrebounded Carthage 38-28.
