Pick-Six Highlights Big Blue Effort in Setback to Carthage

The Millikin football team traveled to Kenosha, Wis. for a College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin matchup against the Firebirds on Saturday, October 25. The Big Blue struggled to get going offensively, with the highlight of the 7-24 loss coming on a pick six by Ryan Baskerville

In the first, the lone points put on the board were by Carthage kicker Mugdim Kreho on a 22-yard try.

After heading into the locker room down with just a Carthage field goal on the board, it was the Firebirds who struck first again in the second half with a 24-yard touchdown pass from Easton Heafner to Collin Durian after a Big Blue three-and-out to start the half.

A blocked Millikin punt gave the Firebirds favorable field position, but Baskerville played spoiler, picking off Heafner for a 56-yard touchdown.

Down 7-10, Bryson Newport's kickoff after Baskerville's touchdown proved to be the turning point in the game. A Davion Hayes return of 36 yards was compounded by a Millikin facemask penalty, giving Carthage the ball at the Millikin 45.

With the short field, Carthage cashed in with a 21 yard touchdown connection from Heafner to Jackson Westmoreland.

On the Big Blue's next drive, they were unable to match the score, failing to convert on 3rd and 8 when a pass intended for Kyle Corkill was broken up at the two yard line. After opting to go for it on fourth down instead of kicking a field goal, Sylas Gomez was sacked to relinquish the ball back to the Firebirds.

Carthage ate up five minutes of the fourth quarter, tacking on another touchdown to take a 7-24 lead on another Heafner to Westmoreland connection.

In the game, the Big Blue totaled just 85 yards of total offense. Re'John Zeno was the leading rusher with 49 yards, and Gomez was 7-for-16.

Defensively, Baskerville totaled nine tackles. Zyon Turnor and Jameson McGee each added six tackles apiece.

The Big Blue will return home on Saturday, November 1 with a tough test against WashU, with kickoff scheduled for 1:00 PM.
