Late Carroll Scores Hand Big Blue Football Homecoming Loss

Millikin football returned to Frank M. Lindsay Field in Decatur, Ill. on Saturday October 4 for a Homecoming matchup with the Pioneers of Carroll University. After heading into the halftime break down 10-14, two late fourth quarter touchdowns by the Pioneers played spoiler in a 17-28 loss.

The Pioneers found themselves on the board first, capitalizing on a short Big Blue punt that started their drive at midfield. Tight end Reed Breckheimer found paydirt with a two yard touchdown run to take a seven point lead.

In the second quarter, Millikin struck back when Sylas Gomez connected with Cooper Christensen for a 7-yard touchdown. Carroll scored on the run once again in their next possession, with an Elisha Nieves five-yard touchdown run.

The Big Blue chipped away at the deficit heading into the halftime break with a 31-yard field goal by Bryson Newport.

After a scoreless third quarter, the Pioneers went to Breckenheimer again for a five-yard touchdown run with 2:42 on the clock to take a 10-21 lead. After a Millikin three-and-out, it took Carroll three plays to score after another short Millikin punt. Mikey Coleman posted a 19-yard touchdown run to put Millikin down 10-28.

Millikin kept playing, starting their drive with 1:42 on the clock at their own 30. They marched down the field, ending the drive with a 13-yard touchdown from Gomez to Kyle Corkill with two seconds remaining to cut the deficit to 17-28.

Gomez was 22-for-36 for 180 yards and two touchdowns. Re'John Zeno was the leading rusher with 53 total yards.

Darion Suber was the leading receiver, tallying 45 yards on eight receptions, and Kevin Louis supplied some excitement with 43 yards on just three receptions.

Defensively, the Big Blue were led by Zyon Turner with seven tackles and Alex Araiza with six tackles, three of them for loss. Turner created a turnover, intercepting a pass in the second quarter and returning it for 30 yards.

With the loss, the Big Blue fall to 2-2, 1-2 in College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin play. Millikin will hit the road on Saturday, October 11 where they will meet North Central College in Naperville, Ill. for a 6:00 PM kickoff.
