Women's Basketball Hangs on for High-Scoring Victory over Knox

The Millikin women's basketball team took the court on Tuesday, December 9 for a matchup against the Prairie Fire of Knox College. The Prairie Fire came into the game with an identical 3-4 record to the Big Blue.

In the game, Millikin defeated the Prairie Fire in a high-scoring affair, 90-83. Knox came into the game with the second-leading scorer in NCAA Division III in Bria Medina, averaging 31.0 points per game. Nikkel Johnson ranks 49th on the list with an average of 18.3 points per game and 29th in field goal percentage, connecting on 58.06% of her attempts. 

Johnson was the top scorer in the game, totaling 35 points, shooting 13-for-18 from the field. Hannah Ermeling added 18 points, recording four made three pointers out of six attempts. Bella Dudley chipped in 12 points, posting a team-high rebounds with seven. Izzy Hay reeled in seven rebounds for the Big Blue. 

After taking a 22-17 lead after the first quarter, Millikin rained down four threes in the second to take a 50-38 lead into the halftime break.

The Prairie Fire would not be put out, surging back to cut the Big Blue lead to nine by the end of the third, keeping the Big Blue lead in single digits for the rest of the contest. A pair of free throws by Medina with 8:38 remaining cut the Millikin lead to three. 

A free throw by Tatum Young, a layup by Johnson, and a three point make by Christina Rice re-extended the lead to nine a minute later, but the Prairie Fire surged again to cut the lad to one with 2:18 left to tick.

The Big Blue made six of eight free throws in the final two minutes to hold on to the lead and take the 90-83 victory. 

Millikin shot 45.8% from the field in the win, shooting 27-for-59. They shot 8-for-20 from beyond the arc to shoot 40%. 

Knox was led by Nayeli Nidez Acuna with 28 points, and Medina added 22. 

Millikin moves to 4-4 with the win. They'll return to the Griswold Center in Decatur, Ill. on Saturday, December 13 when they meet the Vikings of Augustana College with tipoff scheduled for 2:00 PM.
