Millikin Women’s Basketball Scores Upset in CCIW Tournament

The sixth seeded Millikin University women's basketball team defeated the third seed Carthage College 63-57 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Women's Basketball Tournament on Feb. 25 in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The Big Blue advance to the CCIW Tournament Semifinals on Friday, Feb. 28 at 7:30 p.m. against the top seed Illinois Wesleyan University at the Shirk Center in Bloomington, Illinois.
 
The Big Blue avenge a 71-55 loss to Carthage last Saturday at the Griswold Center. It was Millikin's second win over the Firebirds at Tarble Arena this season winning 55-52 on January 11.
 
Cold shooting effected both teams in the first quarter with Millikin finishing the period leading 8-6. Carthage took a 13-12 advantage with seven minutes left in the second quarter. CCIW Newcomer of the Year Nikkel Johnson gave Millikin the lead for good at 13-12 on a basket with 5:55 left in the second. Johnson would score six straight to push the Big Blue lead to 15-11. Emily Brenneisen and Matayia Tellis would hit three-pointers before halftime give Millikin at 24-16 advantage at intermission.
 
Millikin would lead by as many as nine in the third quarter with both teams scoring 17 points and the Big Blue going to the final quarter up 41-33.
 
Carthage would rally in the fourth quarter and would pull to within two at 44-42 on a three-pointer by Malia Green. Millikin would answer with back-to-back three pointers from Kyleigh Block and Tellis. Millikin led 52-45 with 3:14 left in the game. Brenneisen would hit six straight free throws to Millikin in the final 30 seconds to seal the victory.
 
Millikin had four players score in double figures led by Johnson with 20. Brenneisen added 16 and Tellis contributed 14 points. Tellis had a team high seven rebounds and six assists. Block finished with 12.
 
Green led Carthage with 19 points followed by Grace Cord with 13.
 
Millikin shot 22-44 (50 percent) from the field and 5-13 from three-point range. The Big Blue converted 14-17 from the free throw line. Carthage shot 21-59 (36 percent) and went 5-22 from beyond the arc.
 
Millikin improves to 9-17 while Carthage finishes 17-9.
