Pair of Freshman Pitchers Earn First Collegiate Career Victories in 2-0 Day at Space Coast Games

The Big Blue softball team took the field in sunny Melbourne, Fla. for their first day of the Space Coast Games on Monday, March 17. In the 2-0 day against St. Norbert College and University of Hartford, a pair of freshman pitchers earned their first career collegiate victories.

In game one against St. Norbert, the Big Blue got on the board in the first inning when Kailyn Coates singled through the right side to score Abby Willis

The Green Knights fought back and put up a five run second inning to pull ahead 1-5. The Big Blue matched it and then some with an eight run inning of their own.

Davison started off the scoring with a triple down the left field line that scored Coates. Then, Bella Palermo's single through the right side scored Davison. Summer Wynn entered the game on a pinch hit opportunity with the bases loaded, delivering a bases clearing double that plated Emily Kobel, Ava Zukowski, and Palermo. Then, Wynn crossed the plate on a Willis single to center. Coates singled through the left side in her second at-bat of the inning, scoring Willis. The scoring rounded out with Coates crossing the plate on an Enlow double to left center, leaving the Big Blue up 9-5.

The Green Knights scratched one across in the top of the seventh, but it was not enough to overcome the deficit and the Big Blue came away with a 9-6 victory.

Coates went 4-for-4 from the plate in game one, and Willis, Enlow, and Palermo each went 2-for-3.

Alyssa Dralle earned her first career collegiate victory in the game, tossing 5.1 innings, striking out four and allowing just four hits in the game.

In game two against Hartford, after four scoreless innings, the Big Blue scratched one across on a Willis single that plated pinch runner Brianna Denault

Millikin tacked on three insurance runs in the seventh, scoring Charley Condill on an RBI groundout by Willis. Davison was responsible for the final two runs crossing the plate when Enlow and Ann Marie Meek scored.

Condill, Davison, and Zukowski all went 2-for-3 from the plate in game two.

Emily Reagan also earned her first career collegiate victory on the day, pitching the full 7.0 innings, striking out five and allowing just three hits.

Millikin will hit the Florida turf again on Tuesday, March 18 when they meet the University of Hartford first, before meeting a new opponent in Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts.
