Softball Splits on Day Two of Space Coast Games

The Big Blue softball team took the turf in sunny Melbourne, Fla. on Tuesday, March 18 for a rematch from the previous day with the University of Hartford and a matchup with the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts.

In game one, the Big Blue got right to it offensively, scoring six runs in the first inning as the home team on the scoreboard. Summer Wynn's single to right field left her on third base after an errant throw, and it scored Charley Condill and Abby Willis. Then, Ann Marie Meek singled through the right side to score Wynn. Ava Zukowski sent a sacrifice fly to left field to plate Meek, then a bunt single by Emily Kobel scored Bella Palermo and Kendallyn Davison to count the sixth run.

But, Hartford answered with a two-run triple in the second. Millikin answered with two runs of their own when Anna Enlow hit an inside the park that scored Wynn.

In the fourth, the Hawks answered once more, scoring two runs in the inning then tacking on six more in the fifth to take an 8-10 lead. Hartford would tack on one more in the seventh to defeat the Big Blue in an 8-11 contest.

Wynn was 3-for-4 from the plate in game one. Davison was 2-for-2, and Bella Palermo was 2-for-3.

Game two saw a happier outcome, with the Big Blue downing Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts 21-2. The Blazers got on the board first, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning.

From there, it was all Big Blue. In the third, Willis singled up the middle to plate Condill. Enlow sent a triple to left field to plate Willis, tying the game at two apiece. Then, Kailyn Coates reached on an error, plating Enlow. Palermo's single up the middle was responsible for two RBIs when Meek and Coates crossed the plate. Zukowski kept the scoring rolling with the sixth run of the inning crossing the plate in Palermo with her single to left field. Willis stepped back up the the plate for the second time in the inning, delivering a single to right that plated Zukowski. Then, Enlow's RBI groundout scored Emily Kobel. Coates earned two RBIs in her next at-bat, scoring Willis and Condill to wrap up the 10 run inning.

In the fourth, Millikin tacked on two more, starting when Condill laid down a squeeze bunt to plate Zukowski. Then, Willis laid down another squeeze bunt, scoring two in Condill and Kobel.

In the fifth, it was a seven-run inning, starting when a double steal saw Abbey Matthews cross the plate. Then, Brianna Denault's bunt plated Maddy Brawley. Palermo scored another run on a wild pitch. Then, Willis brought Kobel and Denault home on a single to center. Lauren Argo crossed the plate on a walk drawn by Coates, then Matthews singled to right to score Willis. The Big Blue scored their 21st and final run of the game when Haley Willan scored on a fielder's choice by Brawley.

Willis was 3-for-5 at the plate with five RBIs. Palermo and Kobel each went 2-for-3 from the plate, and Condill was 2-for-4.
