Softball Downs Western Connecticut State, Battles Back against UWEC for Space Coast Split

The Millikin softball team returned after a day off in Florida for their second to last day at the Space Coast Games in Melbourne, Fla. on Thursday, March 20. The Big Blue picked up a win in their morning contest against Western Connecticut State before falling to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, battling back after incurring an early deficit.

In game one, Western Connecticut State got on the board first, scoring after a leadoff base hit led to a run crossing the plate on a wild pitch.

But, the Big Blue evened the score in the third when a first and third situation turned into a double steal with Abby Willis swiping second, assisting Charley Condill's steal of home.

Then, in the fifth, Willis was involved again, singling to right field to score the pinch runner, Brianna Denault. Millikin tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the sixth with Ava Zukowski sending a double to right center, plating a pair of pinch runners in Maddy Brawley and Abbey Matthews to seal the 4-1 game one victory.

In game one, Condill was 2-for-3 from the plate, and Emily Kobel went 1-for-2. Kelsey Bruno earned the victory in the circle, striking out 11 and allowing just three hits.

In game two, UWEC put up nine runs in the first inning on seven hits, leaving the Big Blue with a big deficit to overcome.

In the second inning, Condill delivered an RBI groundout to score Ann Marie Meek. Then, in the fourth, Meek crossed the plate again on a passed ball. In the fifth, Kendallyn Davison capitalized on a Blugolds throwing error, taking an extra base to cut the deficit to 4-9. Later on in the fifth, Kobel reached on another Eau Claire error, with Meek and Denault scoring as a result.

Anna Enlow was 2-for-4 in game two. Alyssa Dralle pitched 5.1 innings of scoreless softball, allowing just three hits and striking out two in her relief appearance.

Millikin will gear up for their final day of action at the Space Coast games on Friday, March 21 when they meet St. Norbert College and Hamilton College.
