Softball's Offensive Outpour Leads to Sweep of Webster

The Big Blue softball team took the field at the Workman Family Softball Field on Friday, March 28, two days earlier than scheduled due to the incoming severe weather on Sunday. In the twin bill against Webster, the Big Blue secured two five inning wins over the Gorloks.

In game one, the Big Blue started off strong, scoring 10 runs in the opening inning. Charley Condill crossed the plate first, scoring when Abby Willis reached on an error. Willis later scored on a wild pitch, then Summer Wynn's single to left scored Anna Enlow. Wynn crossed the plate when Ann Marie Meek reached on a Gorlok error. Then Ava Zukowski's single to center plated Meek and Kendallyn Davison. Willis headed back to the plate, singling down the right field line to score Condill and Zukowski. Then, Enlow's homerun to right field with Willis aboard plated the ninth and tenth runs of the inning.

The Big Blue tacked on three more in the third, starting with Haley Willan's single that scored Abbey Matthews, and Willis crossed the plate after a throwing error. The final run of the game was scored on Bella Palermo's single up the middle that scored Willan.

In the 13-0 win, Condill was 2-for-2 at the plate and Zukowski was 2-for-3. Kelsey Bruno picked up her fourth straight win in the circle, tossing 3.0 innings, allowing just one hit and striking out six. Abby Wilken pitched 2.0 innings in relief, allowing no hits and striking out two.

In the second game of the day, the Big Blue got in the scoring column early, starting with an RBI groundout by Enlow that scored Willis. Then, Wynn tripled to right field to plate Kailyn Coates. In the third, they added three more runs. Condill stole third, then advanced home on a Webster error. Then, Meek walked with the bases loaded to bring Coates home, and Wynn scored on a wild pitch to give MU a 5-0 lead.

Webster scored a pair of runs in the fourth, with Adriana Rodriguez singling up the middle to score Madi Stichling. Then, Prisha Nigam reached on a fielder's choice, with Cheyenne Dickens crossing the plate despite the Big Blue securing an out at second.

But, the Big Blue would tack on five more in the bottom of the fifth to end the game early. Coates sent a homerun over the left field fence, scoring two with Enlow aboard. Meek added another RBI with her single to center that plated Wynn. Then, Emily Kobel singled through the right side to bring Meek home. The final run scored on a squeeze bunt off the bat of Condill that scored Zukowski.

In game two, Abby Willis was 2-for-3 at the plate, and Coates was 1-for-1, scoring three runs and tallying two RBI.

Carly Ward earned the win on the mound, pitching 4.0 innings, striking out two and allowing five hits. Alyssa Dralle entered the game in the fifth, tossing a hitless fifth to pick up a save.

The Big Blue will have a quick turnaround, heading to Jacksonville, Ill. on Saturday, March 29 for their final non-conference doubleheader at Illinois College, with games scheduled for 1:00 and 3:00 PM.
