Softball Opens Second Weekend of 2025 with Wins over UW-Stout and Hope

The Millikin softball team opened up their second weekend of the 2025 season at home for the second Millikin Invitational of the season on Friday, March 7. The Big Blue picked up wins over UW-Stout and Hope on the first day of the three day tournament that will consist of 12 total games at the Workman Family Softball Field in Decatur, Ill.

In game one against UW-Stout, the Big Blue led 5-0 before a seven run Blue Devil sixth inning put them down two heading into the seventh. In the first inning, Charley Condill scored on a wild pitch, then an Ann Marie Meek double to left center plated Emily Kobel. A single swing by Anna Enlow added another run in the fourth when she homered down the right field line. Then, in the fifth a sacrifice bunt by Kobel scored Condill, and Meek was responsible for another RBI when her single scored Kobel.

After the seven run sixth by Stout that included five walks, two doubles, and three singles, the Big Blue rallied in the seventh. Abby Willis hit a double to right center that scored pinch hitter Brianna Denault, then Summer Wynn's sacrifice fly plated Willis to even the score.

In the eighth, down to International Tiebreaker rules with a runner beginning on second base, the Big Blue's Abby Wilken earned the first out on a sacrifice bunt, then struck out the Stout #2 and #3 hitters, Emma Muehlenbeck and Donna D'Addabbo to end the inning.

In the bottom of the inning, Maddy Brawley pinch ran as the runner at second, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt, then Ava Zukowski's double to right center scored Brawley to earn the 8-7 game one win.

Condill was 3-for-4 from the plate, scoring two runs. Meek was 2-for-3 from the plate with two RBI, and Zukowski went 2-for-4 from the plate.

Emily Reagan pitched five innings for the Big Blue, and Wilken picked up her first career victory in her 2.2 innings of relief work.

In game two, the Big Blue were the away team on the scoreboard. They got the scoring going in the top of the inning when Meek's single scored Kobel. Hope answered with a Gianna Kerschbaum single that scored Kenadee Schnick.

In the fourth, the Big Blue were back on the offensive with a sacrifice fly off the bat of Lauren Argo that scored Meek, then Kendallyn Davison's single to right scored Enlow. Tacking on another was Zukowski's single that scored Davison, then Zukowski crossed the plate on a wild pitch. Haley Willan checked in as a pinch hitter, delivering a sacrifice fly to score Willis, then Wynn's single up the middle scored Condill in the six-run fourth inning.

Hope scored one of there own, with Kerchbaum knocking in Schnick once again.

In the seventh, Argo gave the Big Blue an insurance run with an RBI groundout that scored pinch runner Abbey Matthews to give Millikin an 8-3 lead heading into the last wraps for the Flying Dutch. Hope put up two runs, but the Big Blue secured the final out on a flyout to wrap up the 8-5 victory.

Meek was 2-for-3 from the plate, and Enlow and Davison each went 2-for-4.

Kelsey Bruno earned the victory in the circle, tossing all seven innings with four strikeouts.

The Big Blue will meet two new opponents at the Workman Family Softball Field on Saturday, March 8 as they match up against DePauw University at 2:00 PM and the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point at 4:30 PM.
