Softball Falls to DePauw and UWSP on Day Two of Millikin Invitational Despite Comeback Efforts

The Big Blue softball team matched up against tough competition on the second day of the Millikin Invitational II at the Workman Family Softball Field on Saturday, March 8. Millikin went 0-2 on a tough day, falling in walkoff fashion as the visitors against DePauw then despite a valiant comeback effort, were downed by University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

In game one, the Big Blue got on the board first on a squeeze bunt off the bat of Abby Willis that scored Anna Enlow in the top of the second inning.

DePauw scored in the fourth on a Madi Lockridge triple that scored Angelese Cruz, then they scored another when Lockridge crossed the plate on a Libby Minobe single up the middle to give the Tigers a one-run advantage.

Kailyn Coates laid down a sacrifice bunt in the fifth to plate Charley Condill and tie the score at 2-2.

DePauw picked up the 2-3 win when Riley Heim knocked in Lockridge with a walkoff single up the middle.

Condill went 3-for-4 from the plate in game one, and Coates and Kendallyn Davison each went 2-for-3.

Emily Reagan pitched all 6.2 innings, striking out one.

In game two, the Big Blue fell behind early when Stevens Point posted a two run first inning and a seven-run second inning.

Millikin rallied, putting up a run in the second when Davison scored on a Pointer error. Then, in the third, Lauren Argo doubled to left center to score Ann Marie Meek

In the fourth, Millikin tacked on three more, first on Summer Wynn's single that scored Willis. Then, Meek delivered a double that scored Wynn and Condill, cutting the deficit to 5-9. In the fifth, Haley Willan stepped into the box for a pinch hit appearance and singled through the left side to score Davison. Wynn reached base on a bases loaded walk that scored Ava Zukowski, but the Big Blue weren't able to tack on any others and fell in the 7-9 contest.

In a game where the Big Blue outhit the Pointers 13-6, Condill went 4-for-5 from the plate, and Wynn was 2-for-3.

The Big Blue issued 13 walks to UWSP batters. Abby Wilken provided 5.0 innings of solid relief, striking out four batters and allowing just one hit.

Millikin will get a chance at a rematch with the Pointers, matching up with UWSP on Sunday, March 9 at 10:00 AM in the final day of the Millikin Invitational II at the Workman Family Softball Field. They'll meet Hanover College in their final game of the weekend at 3:30 PM.
