Softball Downs North Park, Nearly Completes Game Two Comeback in CCIW Split

The Big Blue softball team traveled to the Windy City on Friday, April 11 for a College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin matchup against the Vikings of North Park University. Millikin split, downing the Vikings in five innings in game one, then just falling short of a comeback effort in game two.

In game one, the Big Blue wasted no time, putting up two runs in the first inning as the visitors on the scoreboard. First, it was Abby Willis crossing the plate when Summer Wynn reached on an NPU fielding error. Then, Kendallyn Davison's double down the left field line scored Wynn.

In the second, the offensive output continued when Emily Kobel reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Ann Marie Meek. Then, an infield single off the bat of Anna Enlow scored Kobel and Ava Zukowski. Davison's double to left center scored Enlow and Condill to take a 7-0 lead.

In the fifth, the Big Blue extended their lead, first on a Bella Palermo double down the left field line that scored Davison. Then, Zukowski's single up the middle plated pinch runner Brianna Denault. An infield single off the bat of Condill plated the final run in pinch runner Abbey Matthews, solidifying the 10-0 victory.

Kelsey Bruno continued her dominance in the circle, striking out 11 and allowing just two hits through her 5.0 innings of work.

Davison was 3-for-3 at the plate in game one with three RBI in a game where the Big Blue tallied 10 hits.

In game two, North Park jumped out to a quick lead, scoring five runs in the first inning. Then, Sydney Snyder sent a grand slam over the left field fence in the second inning to put the Big Blue down nine runs.

Millikin chipped away at the deficit in the fourth with Denault crossing the plate on Davison's double to centerfield. Then, Palermo brought Davison home on her single through the right side to reduce the deficit to 2-9. In the fifth, they tacked on another when Kailyn Coates delivered a double to right center that scored Enlow.

In the sixth, two runs crossed the plate on Haley Willan's single to left field. Zukowski scored on a passed ball to cut the lead to 6-9. Condill's single up the middle added another when Kobel crossed the plate. Wynn singled to plate Condill and put the Big Blue within one run.

The Big Blue went three up, three down defensively in the top of the seventh. Palermo reached to start the seventh inning, reaching on a Viking error. Then, a deep flyout and two straight lineouts retired the side to give NPU the victory.

Coates was 2-for-3 from the plate in game two and Palermo was 2-for-4.

Carly Ward pitched two innings of relief, striking out one and allowing hits. Alyssa Dralle struck out three in her three innings of relief.

Millikin softball will remain north for the weekend, matching up against Wheaton College in a doubleheader on Saturday, April 12.
