Big Blue Football Falls Short at Augustana in CCIW Battle

The Big Blue football team traveled to Rock Island, Ill. for a College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin matchup against the Vikings of Augustana. Millikin fell short, suffering their first loss in a 6-33 game.

Augustana struck early, capitalizing on a muffed punt by the Big Blue after their opening drive that led to a touchdown connection from Jimmy Makuh to Breyden Smith. The Vikings struck again two minutes later with a Ben Ludlum rushing touchdown.

The Big Blue chipped away at the Viking lead, using a 75-yard drive ending in a Re'John Zeno one yard touchdown run, cutting the lead to 6-14 as the game headed into the second quarter. 

The Millikin defense forced a fumble recovered by Quinton Tucker, but MU couldn't capitalize. The Vikings saw another rushing touchdown with just over four minutes to go until the halftime break on a Josh Lim run up the middle. The Vikings added a field goal to their tally, leaving the Big Blue with a 6-24 deficit heading into the locker room. 

Early in the third quarter, the Vikings added a safety and a touchdown by Lim to go up 6-33. 

Sylas Gomez was 20-for-27 for 171 yards but was sacked six times in the contest.

Zeno exited the contest early, making AJ Lee the leading rusher with 56 yards on eight rushing attempts. Kevin Louis was the leading receiver with 61 yards on five receptions.

Defensively, Zyon Turner was the leading tackler with eight, and Latrell Hannon tallied seven. Qowiyu Amuda added a sack. 

The Big Blue fall to 2-1 on the season with the loss, 1-1 in CCIW play. Millikin will look to bounce back next week at the homecoming game on Saturday, October 4 when they play host to Carroll for a 1:00 PM kickoff.
