Women's Basketball Hangs Tough with #21 Carroll

The Millikin women's basketball team made the long trek to Waukesha, Wis. to take on the #21 Pioneers of Carroll University. The Big Blue hung tough, down just 35-41 at the halftime break, then 52-57 after three quarters of play. The Pioneers outscored the Big Blue 12-25 in the final quarter of play to pull away.

Bella Dudley was the leading scorer for the Big Blue with 32 points on 12-for-18 shooting. Izzy Hay went 4-for-4 from the field in the first half, adding another second half basket to score 11 points for Millikin. Nikkel Johnson was the leading rebounder with eight. 

Millikin shot 49.0% from the field, connecting on 25-of-51 attempts. 

Carroll was led by Natalie Gricius with 33 points on 11-for-15 shooting. posting a double-double with 11 rebounds. Emilie Wizner added 19 points. The Pioneers shot 50.0% from the field, going 30-for-60. They forced 23 Big Blue turnovers, scoring 22 points off of giveaways.

Millikin took a 7-6 lead early on with a three pointer by Dudley, then the Pioneers went on an 11-point run. A make from beyond the arc off the hand of Natalie Gartlan cut the deficit to seven, then the teams traded buckets by Dudley and Gricius to head to the huddles with a score of 12-19. 

After the Pioneers held a double-digit lead for most of the second quarter, the Big Blue posted two layups by Dudley and Hay in the last 30 seconds before the halftime break to cut the lead to six.

In a quarter where they shot 71.43% from the field, threes by Gartlan and Rachel Holthaus cut the lead to four with 3:23 remaining. Another three by Dudley with 19 seconds left to tick put the Big Blue down just three, but the Pioneers responded with a jumper by Julia Lokker to end the quarter.

The Pioneers opened the fourth with a 12 point run to to up 52-69, thwarting the Big Blue's attempts at a comeback. 

The Big Blue will face another tough test when they hit the road to meet CCIW leading, #17 Illinois Wesleyan in Bloomington, Ill. on Wednesday, January 14 with tipoff set for 7:00 pm.
