Women's Basketball Outlasted by #16 Illinois Wesleyan

The Millikin women's basketball team faced a tall task on Wednesday, January 14 when they met #16 Illinois Wesleyan in Bloomington, Ill. With the Big Blue finding themselves up against another ranked opponent, they had a strong first half showing, heading into the locker room down just 26-32.

In a game that nearly mimicked their prior game against Carroll, the Big Blue kept it close heading into the fourth quarter but were outscored 8-26 in the final period of play.

Bella Dudley was the leading scorer with 15 points on 7-for-18 shooting. Hannah Ermeling chipped in four threes for 12 points. Nikkel Johnson led the rebounding category with 11 boards.

The Big Blue were plagued by turnovers against a tenacious Titan defense, giving the ball away 30 times compared to Wesleyan's 18.

Ava Bardic was the leading scorer for the Titans, totaling 30 points on 12-for-23 shooting. Asia Kobylarczyk added 18 points.

Millikin shot 39.6% from the field on 19-for-46 shooting. The Big Blue closed out the first quarter with a buzzer beating jumper off the hand of Rachel Holthaus. A three by Ermeling gave the Big Blue the lead with 6:38 remaining in the second quarter at 19-18, then after an IWU bucket, Ermeling connected again to go ahead 22-20. The Titans went on to score six straight points before trading buckets to end the quarter.

The Big Blue will return to the Griswold Center on Saturday, January 17 for a matchup with the Firebirds of Carthage College with tipoff set for 2:00 PM.
