Millikin Women's Basketball Downs Firebirds

The Millikin women's basketball team celebrated Alumni Day on Saturday, January 17, returning to their home court after two consecutive road games and looking to snap a four-game skid. The Big Blue delivered with a 77-67 win over the Firebirds of Carthage College.

The Big Blue were led in scoring by Nikkel Johnson with 28 points, going 12-for-14 from the field and securing a double-double in the game with 11 rebounds. Bella Dudley continued to produce offensively with 22 points on 6-for-11 shooting.

Malia Green was the leading scorer for the Firebirds with 19 points on 8-for-19 shooting. Alyssa Orozco added 17 points.

The Big Blue shot 55.8% from the field, shooting an impressive 10-of-13 in the second quarter to head into the halftime break with a 40-33 lead, with the Firebirds shooting just 26.7% from the field in the second.

After falling behind by as many as 7 in the second, a three from Bella Dudley with 4:36 left to tick in the half gave the Big Blue a lead, then back-to-back baskets by Johnson extended the Big Blue lead to five.

A three by Hannah Ermeling with 1:31 left in the third quarter put the Big Blue up by double digits, going ahead 57-45 and holding the double digit lead heading into the fourth. They held the double digit advantage until a Green layup by Carthage on the fastbreak put Carthage back within eight.

The Big Blue held strong defensively, and closed out the 10-point victory with four consecutive made free throws by Dudley.

Millikin will return to their home floor with a mid-week matchup against the Cardinals of North Central College, set for 7:00 PM tipoff on Wednesday, January 21.
