Fourth Quarter Fouls Plague Women's Basketball in Loss against North Central

Millikin women's basketball met the Cardinals of North Central College on Wednesday, January 21 at the Griswold Center in Decatur, Ill. The Big Blue fell 69-80 in the contest, plagued by fourth quarter fouls.

Millikin shot 28-for-55 from the field for 50.9% efficiency compared to North Central's 27-for-61 for a 44.3% efficiency.

The Cardinals jumped out to a 15-23 lead before a scoreless final minute of the first quarter. The Big Blue cut the deficit to four at 25-29 on a free throw by Izzy Hay with 3:22 remaining in the first half. They headed into the halftime break down 27-32 after trading baskets in the final seconds of the half.

Millikin evened the score then took the lead, going on an 8-0 run early in the third quarter. The run was highlighted by back-to-back scores by Natalie Gartlan on a jumper and a three-pointer, giving Millikin a 38-35 lead. North Central evened the score at 40 apiece, then again at 42-42. The squads headed into the huddle before the fourth tied at 49-49 after Millikin outscored the Cardinals 22-17 in the third quarter.

The Cardinals opened the fourth quarter with a four-point play, with Ameli Sanchez connecting on a three and drawing a foul. Their eight-point run was broken by a layup by Izzy Hay with 7:49 remaining. The Big Blue were tagged with 11 fouls in the fourth quarter, including a technical foul issued to Nikkel Johnson. North Central went 12-for-14 from the line in the fourth to help them earn the 11 point victory. 

Bella Dudley was the leading scorer in the game for the Big Blue, scoring 19 points on 7-for-15 shooting. Izzy Hay and Nikkel Johnson added 11 apiece. 

The Cardinals were led by Kennedy Hartwig with 24 points, shooting 4-for-9 from three-point range and 7-for-13 from the field. 

The Big Blue will be back in action at the Griswold Center on Wednesday, January 28 against #13 Illinois Wesleyan with tipoff set for 7:00 pm.
