Box Score 2 The Millikin softball team returned to the field on Saturday, March 14 for a doubleheader in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, earning two victories on the day. The Big Blue rallied for a 5–3 win over Transylvania in game one before shutting out Franklin 4–0 in the second contest.
In the first game of the day, Millikin battled back from an early deficit to defeat Transylvania 5–3. The Pioneers jumped out to a 3–0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a pair of RBI singles.
The Big Blue began to chip away in the fourth inning. After Haley Willan and Ava Zukowski reached base, Emily Kobel delivered an RBI single to right field to score Kailyn Coates. Moments later, Willan crossed the plate on a Transylvania error to cut the deficit to 3–2.
Millikin took the lead in the sixth inning with a three-run rally. Coates opened the inning with a single before Willan doubled to left field to put two runners in scoring position. Zukowski followed with a clutch double to left field that drove in two runs to give the Big Blue a 4–3 advantage. Ann Marie Meek added an insurance run later in the inning with an RBI double to center field to extend the lead to 5–3.
Shayna Woolwine earned the win in the circle, tossing a complete game while allowing five hits and three runs across seven innings of work.
Zukowski led the offense with two hits and two RBIs, while Kobel and Meek each added RBI hits. Coates scored twice in the victory.
In game two, the Big Blue used timely hitting and a strong pitching performance to secure a 4–0 win over Franklin.
Millikin broke the scoreless tie in the third inning when Summer Wynn launched a two-run home run to give the Big Blue a 2–0 lead.
The Big Blue added insurance runs in the sixth inning. After a pair of extra-base hits put runners in scoring position, Millikin pushed across two runs to extend the advantage to 4–0.
Alyssa Dralle controlled the game from the circle, keeping Franklin off the scoreboard throughout the contest while the Millikin defense backed her with several key plays.
Wynn highlighted the offense with her two-run home run, while Abby Willis, Haley Willan, Emily Kobel, Ann Marie Meek, and Kailyn Coates each contributed hits in the victory.
Millikin will return to action on Sunday, March 15 as the Big Blue continue play in Elizabethtown.
