Big Blue Baseball Cruises Past Elmhurst

The Big Blue baseball team traveled to Wheaton, Ill. to meet the Bluejays of Elmhurst University in a Sunday College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin matchup. In a game that ended in eight innings, the Big Blue were victorious, 18-5.

Millikin's offense got to work right away in the first with Ty Cribbett's single scoring Leyton Ivers. Then, Sam Bushur followed suit with a single that plated Pete Britton. Mick Niebrugge put the Big Blue up 3-0 with a sacrifice fly that scored Cribbett.

Elmhurst recorded a run in the bottom of the second, but the Big Blue cooked up another bout of offense in the third, starting again with Cribbett. Cribbett's double to center scored Britton, then Niebrugge recorded his second sacrifice fly of the day to bring Cribbett home.

Cribbett's next at-bat saw a single through the right side to score both Anderson Decker and Britton. With Millikin up 7-1, Elmhurst scored another run in the fourth.

The squads traded runs in the fifth, then Cribbett sent a two-run homerun over the right field fence in the sixth to start the offensive explosion. Bushur's triple to center scored another run. As part of the five-run sixth inning, Niebrugge tallied an RBI single and Ivers recorded a sacrifice fly.

The Bluejays kept the game alive by scoring a run in the bottom of the sixth, then Bushur's solo homerun in the top of the seventh put the Big Blue up 14-4. Elmhurst once again kept the game alive with two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but the Big Blue's four-run eighth on an RBI double by Ivers that scored Gage Reynolds, an RBI single by Britton, and a two-RBI double by Carder Reich gave Millikin the 18-5 eight inning victory.

At the plate, Cribbett was 4-for-4 with six RBIs and Bushur went 5-for-6.

Caleb Akins was the winning pitcher, striking out six through 5.0 innings of work and allowing just three hits. Matthew Brummer offered three innings of relief, striking out two.

With the win, the Big Blue move to 25-8 overall, 11-5 in CCIW play.

Millikin will be back in action on Tuesday, April 21 when they travel to Naperville, Ill. for a matchup with the Cardinals of North Central College.
