Softball Sweeps Carroll to Move to 9-3 in Conference Play

Millikin softball took the field at the Workman Family Softball Field in Decatur, Ill. on Sunday, April 26 for their second doubleheader of the weekend, meeting the Pioneers of Carroll University.

In game one, the Big Blue bats struck first. After Ann Marie Meek reached on a walk, a triple in the left center gap off the bat of Summer Wynn plated the first run. In the second inning, Millikin tacked on three more, starting with Abbey Matthews' single to right that scored pinch runner Brianna Denault. Ava Zukowski reached on a fielder's choice, earning an RBI with Emily Kobel crossing the plate. Then, a bases loaded walk issued to Ann Marie Meek put Millikin up 4-0.

In the fourth, Wynn recorded another RBI on a single through the right side that scored Charley Condill. Haley Willan's single to left field brought Wynn home. Needing just two runs to end the game in five innings, a sacrifice fly off the bat of Abby Willis scored Matthews. The final run came on Wynn's single to left that plated Zukowsk, giving Millikin an 8-0 opening game win in five innings.

In game one, Condill and Wynn each went 3-for-4 from the plate, and Matthews was 2-for-2. Alyssa Dralle was the game one victor, striking out three through five innings of work, allowing the Pioneers to scatter just five hits.

In game two, Wynn was once again responsible for bringing home the first run. Her single to left scored Condill, giving the Big Blue a 1-0 lead. Millikin added another pair of runs in the third inning, starting off the inning with a double from Zukowski and singles off the bats of Condill and Willis. After the single by Willis brought Zukowski home, a sacrifice fly by Meek plated Condill.

With the bases loaded, a force out opportunity at home for the Pioneers went awry in the bottom of the fourth. Denault crossed the plate on a ball put into play by Condill on a Carroll throwing error. Meek drew another bases loaded walk to put Millikin up 5-0 with Matthews crossing the plate. Wynn nearly cleared the left field fence on a double that scored both Zukowski and Condill.

Carroll scratched across a run in the top of the fifth, scoring on a single by Kali Stanchina that plated pinch runner Adeline Bretz.

Millikin secured the final two runs necessary to end the game in the sixth. Zukowski's leadoff walk led to her scoring on a wild pitch, then Willis scored after singling, capitalizing on a Pioneer error. The Big Blue took game two 9-1 in six innings.

In game two, Zukowski went 2-for-2 from the dish, and Willis and Wynn each went 2-for-4. Abby Wilken earned the victory in the circle, striking out two and allowing six hits through her six innings pitched.

Millikin will return to the Workman Family Softball Field for a pair of doubleheaders next weekend, meeting Wheaton College for the first of the two on Saturday, May 2 with game one starting at 1:00 PM. The doubleheader will serve as senior day for the Big Blue. With today's sweep, the Big Blue move to 23-12 overall, 9-3 in College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin play.
