Softball Records Third Consecutive Doubleheader Sweep

The Millikin softball team matched up against the Tigers of DePauw University on Wednesday, April 8 at the Workman Family Softball Field in Decatur, Ill. The Big Blue recorded their third consecutive sweep, defeating the Tigers 11-4, 4-2.

In game one, the Big Blue got to work offensively right away, with Ann Marie Meek's double to centerfield scoring Charley Condill. Meek later crossed the plate on a passed ball to put Millikin up 2-0.

The Tigers tacked on a run in the top of the third on a sacrifice bunt from Libby Minobe to cut the deficit to one. The Big Blue got back to work in the bottom of the inning, with Haley Willan sending a two RBI double to left center to plate Summer Wynn and Meek. Abbey Matthews scored pinch runner Brianna Denault on a single to left, giving Millikin a 5-1 lead.

DePauw once again struck back, first scoring on a homerun from Ella Kuenster in the fifth, then on a two RBI single from pinch hitter Emily DuMais.

Up just 5-4, Matthews extended the lead in her fifth inning at bat, doubling to left center to score both Emily Kobel and Kailyn Coates. Condill's infield single scored Matthews. Millikin added another three runs in the sixth to take an 11-4 lead. They closed out the top of the seventh to take game one.

In the first game, Condill, Meek, Wynn, and Matthews all went 2-for-4 from the dish. Willan led the way going 3-for-4. Alyssa Dralle picked up the win in the circle, striking out six in the complete game victory.

In game two, the Big Blue once again started off the scoring early. Wynn sent a first inning double to left to score Condill. An RBI groundout by Avery Welsh in the top of the second knotted the game at 1-1.

Millikin answered in the third, with a double by Meek scoring Abby Willis. Kailyn Coates sent a two-run homerun over the left field fence to plate herself and Denaul, giving the Big Blue a 4-1 advantage.

DePauw tacked on a run in the fifth, but the Big Blue held on defensively for a 4-2 game two victory.

Eight Big Blue hitters tallied one hit apiece in game two. Abby Wilken took the victory in the circle, striking out five.

Millikin softball will hit the road on Saturday, April 11 for a College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin doubleheader against Elmhurst in Elmhurst, Ill.
