Big Blue Baseball Posts Ten-Run Victory over North Park to Advance to CCIW Tournament Championship Game

The Big Blue baseball team matched up with the Vikings of North Park University on Friday, May 8 in their second game of the 2026 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin baseball tournament. After a rainy day, the game originally scheduled for 2:00 PM began at 7:34 PM.

Millikin got on the board first, scoring in the top of the second as the visitors on the scoreboard. Mick Niebrugge crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Anderson Decker after leading off the inning with a walk.

The Big Blue tacked on another in the top of the third, loading the bases with no outs. Sam Bushur hit an RBI groundout to plate Pete Britton. The Big Blue came up empty with their final two outs but headed into the bottom of the inning with a 2-0 advantage.

The Vikings struck back in the bottom of the third, scoring their first run the same way the Big Blue did. Joe Perona drew a walk, later scoring on a sacrifice fly by John Greenwood.

Millikin regained their two-run advantage in the top of the fourth, plating a run on a bases loaded walk drawn by Carder Reich, scoring Leyton Ivers.

In the bottom of the fourth, Matt Brummer worked out of a bases loaded jam, striking out the Vikings top two hitters in Perona and Taylor Joseph.

With two outs in the top of the fifth, Gage Reynolds sent a line drive to the right center gap that made it past Perona's diving effort in center. Using his speed on the basepaths, Reynolds recorded the fourth Big Blue run on an inside the park homerun.

The Big Blue put at least one run up for the fifth straight inning in the sixth, with Britton drawing a leadoff walk then scoring on a double down the line off the bat of Ty Cribbett. They tacked on a second run with Cribbett scoring on a sacrifice fly by Reich. Their third run of the inning came on an RBI double by Easton Steck that put Millikin up 7-1, scoring Bushur who was the beneficiary of a Viking error.

North Park scraped across a run in the bottom of the seventh with John Greenwood scoring on a ground rule double to right field off the bat of Vinnie Marvucic.

In the top of the eighth, three straight walks issued to Cribbett, Reich, and Bushur left the bases loaded with no outs for Millikin. A chopper that found its way through the left side of the infield for a single from Niebrugge plated pinch runner Julian Cabanin. A walk issued to Steck brought Reich home, giving Millikin a 9-2 advantage. Another walk, this one drawn by Reynolds, forced the second call to the bullpen of the inning for NPU. Continuing the pattern, another bases loaded walk issued to Decker brought Niebrugge. The walk marked the sixth of the inning, then a sacrifice fly off the bat of Leyton Ivers scored Steck to give Millikin a 12-2 advantage.

The Big Blue held strong defensively in the bottom of the eight to take the 12-2, eight inning victory.

In the game, Decker went 2-for-3 from the plate, and Reynolds was 2-for-4.

Matt Brummer earned his sixth victory of the season, striking out seven through 5.0 innings pitched. Nolan Reiman offered 1.1 innings of relief, striking out two and allowing just two hits. Gavin Houchins closed things out for the Big Blue, striking out one and allowing one hit through 1.2 innings of work.

Millikin baseball remains in the driver's seat, set to meet the winner of Carthage and North Park at 3:00 PM on Saturday, May 9 at the Workman Family Baseball Field in the CCIW Tournament Championship game.
