Millikin Softball Opens Florida Trip

          The Millikin softball team opened its annual Florida trip playing four games in 18 hours in Clermont, Florida on March 21-22.  The Big Blue went 1-3 to open the trip.
          Millikin was scheduled to play two early evening games on Monday, but the games were delayed by nearly two hours due to other games running long. 
In Monday's first game, Millikin lost to Buffalo State 15-0 in six innings.  Buffalo State scored one run in the first before putting up three runs in both the third and fourth innings.  The Bengals broke the game open with an eight run sixth inning.
          Pitcher Lexi Haley was the star of the game for Buffalo State.  She went 4-4 at the plate with a home run, two doubles and five RBIs.  Haley limited Millikin to four hits in six innings of work.  Danielle Szymkowiak went 3-3 with a home run.
          Alexis Dockins, Marissa Padilla, Alyssa Visvardis and Alyssa Voegele had the Millikin hits.  Visvardis doubled.
          Millikin bounced back in the second game on Monday night defeating Wisconsin-Oshkosh 7-4.
          Both teams scored four runs in its half of the third inning with each team getting a three-run homer in the frame.  Millikin opened the scoring in the inning on an RBI single by Dockins.  Visvardis provided the power in the inning with a three-run homer.  The bottom of the inning saw Oshkosh answer back thanks in part to a three-run shot by Abby Menting.
          Millikin scored a single run in the fourth on a run scoring single by Brooke Heimerl.  The Big Blue posted two runs in the fifth with Dockins scoring on a wild pitch and Visvardis scoring on a sacrifice fly by Haley Rotert.
          Visvardis and Dockins each had two hits in the game for Millikin.  Cathy Lebryk was the winning pitcher allowing four runs on nine hits over seven innings of work.  Lebryk moved to 4-0 on the season with the win.
          After finishing up Monday's games after 9 p.m. in Florida, the Big Blue were back on the field at 9 a.m. Florida time on Tuesday.  In game one the Big Blue lost to the University of Chicago 11-2.
          The University of Chicago led 2-0 after the top of the third inning, but the Big Blue tied the game in the bottom of the inning.  Kirsten Iversen drove home two runs with a bases loaded single to tie the game.
          The University of Chicago broke the game open with seven runs in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth.
          Kathleen Kohm went 3-4 with three RBIs to pace the University of Chicago attack.  Carly Schultz was 3-3 and Kristin Lopez was 2-4 with three RBIs.
          Millikin was limited to two hits in the game.
          In its second game on Tuesday, Millikin lost to Wisconsin-Whitewater 11-5.  Millikin jumped out to an early lead with a four run first inning, but the Warhawks answered with four in the third and three runs in the four and fifth innings.
          Iversen led the Millikin attack going 2-3 with a double and two RBIs.  Visvardis and Jordan Themer had the other Millikin runs batted in.
          Caitlin Catino led Whitewater going 4-4 with a triple and two RBIs.  Amy Ricci drove home three and went 2-4 for the Warhawks.
          Millikin is now 4-6 while Whitewater goes to 4-3.
          Millikin will play the Rochester Institute of Technology and St. Norbert College on Wednesday, March 23 starting at 1 p.m. ET.
