Millikin Softball Wins Twice

The Millikin softball team picked up two wins on March 24 behind the stellar pitching of sophomore Cathy Lebryk.  The Big Blue defeated the College of Benedict 7-2 and shutout Owsego State 1-0.  Millikin has now won four straight to improve to 8-6 on the season.
In game one, the College of St. Benedict jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third inning.  With runners at first and third, the Blazers scored a run on the bases.  Big Blue catcher Alyssa Voegele threw out the runner at second base, but Kate Deming raced home from third for the run.
Millikin tied the game in the fifth.  Alyssa Visvardis tripled and scored on a Kirsten Iversen bunt.
Millikin scored four times in the sixth to take the lead.  Jordan Themer, Alexis Dockins and Brooke Heimerl all singled to open the inning. Heimerl drove home the first run.  The second run scored after a Blazer error and Voegele drove home a run on a fielder's choice.  Iversen capped off the inning with an RBI single.
Millikin sealed the victory with two runs in the top of the seventh on a two-out two-run single from Visvardis.
Visvardis was 3-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored.  Iversen had two hits and two RBIs.  Dockins, Heimerl and Themer each collected two hits for Millikin.
Lebryk was the winning pitcher throwing seven innings allowing only eight hits.
Deming, Becky Gigstad and Courtney Wissbaum each had two hits for the Blazers.  The loss dropped the College of St. Benedict to 7-4 on the season.
In game two, Millikin broke up a pitchers' duel with a run in the sixth inning.  Devin Curry opened the inning with a single.  Dockins then had a bunt base hit to put runs at first and second.  After a successful sacrifice bunt by Heimerl, Visvardis' sacrifice bunt scored Curry.  Dockins and Curry each had two hits for Millikin.
Lebryk was the dominated in the circle in game two allowing the Lakers only three hits in seven innings of work while striking out four.  Lebryk is now 7-1 on the season.
Millikin will finish its Florida trip on Friday starting at 9 a.m. ET against the University of Maine-Farmington and Eastern Connecticut State.
