Millikin Softball Splits on Opening Night

         The Millikin softball team opened its 2016 season splitting a pair of games at the Rochester Dome Games played indoors in Rochester, Minnesota on March 4.
Millikin opened the season with a 9-0 win over Martin Luther in five innings.  The Big Blue scored two runs in each of the first two innings and then broke the game open with a five run fourth inning.  Millikin pounded out eight hits and took advantage of four Martin Luther errors.
         Senior Kelli Layton and sophomore Alyssa Voegele were each 2-3 for the Big Blue.  Layton had a triple and scored twice. Voegele had a double and drove home two.  Alyssa Visvardis, Alexis Dockins, and Brooke Heimerl each doubled and had a run batted in for Millikin.  Justice Miller, Marissa Padilla and Kirsten Iversen all had RBIs for the Big Blue.
         Sophomore pitcher Cathy Lebryk got the win shutting out Martin Luther over five innings on three hits while striking out three.
         Millikin lost its second game to the host team ninth ranked Luther College 6-0.  Luther opened the game with a five run first inning and added a single run in the sixth inning.
         Luther pitching held the Big Blue to just two hits while the Norse pounded out 10 hits.  Luther's Samantha Brantland earned the win throwing six innings and allowing two hits while striking out seven.
         Dockins had both of Millikin's hits including a double.
         Millikin will face St. Mary's College and Hamline University on Saturday in the Rochester Dome.
