Millikin Softball Sweeps Engineers

          The Millikin softball team swept Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in a doubleheader in the home opener for the Big Blue at Rotary Field in Decatur, Illinois on April 5.  The two teams battled through cold and extremely windy conditions during the games.
          Millikin rallied to win game one 11-10.  The game featured seven homeruns.  The Engineers had a 10-9 advantage heading into the bottom of the seventh inning.  Amber Morgan opened the inning and the Big Blue's first run scored on an RBI single by Jordan ThemerBrooke Heimerl had the game winning hit for the Big Blue driving home Themer with the winning run.
          Kirsten Iversen was 3-4 for Millikin with a homerun.  Alyssa Voegele was 2-3 with a triple and a homerun and three RBIs.  Heimerl, Amber Morgan and Justice Miller each had two hits for the Big Blue.  Miller had two RBIs.
          Whitley Baker was the winning pitcher in relief for Millikin.
          Rose-Hulman had five homeruns in the game including two each from Marissa Stout and Maddie Struble.  Jenny Miller also homered.  Jessica Will had three hits for the Engineers.
          Millikin won game two 12-4 in six innings.  The second game featured four homeruns with Alyssa Visvardis hitting two homeruns for Millikin.  Visvardis tied the Kathleen Campbell's Big Blue record for homeruns in a career with 20. 
Visvardis was 3-4 with three runs scored and three RBIs.  Alexis Dockins, Voegele, Iversen, Morgan, Miller and Themer each had two hits for the Big Blue.
Millikin pounded out 17 hits in the game.
          Baker earned her second victory of the day throwing six innings and allowing four runs on six hits.
          Will and Michelle Korf each went 2-3 with a homerun for the Engineers.
          Millikin is now 11-7 while Rose-Hulman goes to 9-7.
          Millikin will open up College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play this weekend when they travel to North Central on April 9.
