Millikin Tennis Goes Undefeated on Spring Trip

The Millikin tennis teams closed out its spring break trip with identical 7-2 wins against the Lynchburg Hornets at Chaplin Park in Hilton Head, South Carolina. With the wins, both teams finished the trip with perfect 4-0 records.

The Big Blue men's tennis team got off to a rapid start sweeping the doubles portion of the match. Jacob Palley/Jacob Hamilton, Connor Sacks/Emerick Fulton, and Greg Schwoeppe/Dane Pierantoni got the Big Blue off to a 3-0 lead. The Millikin men then won four of the six singles matches, with wins coming from Hamilton, Sacks, Fulton and Schwoeppe. Captains Fulton & Sacks both recovered from down a set and large deficits in the second set to each win their singles matches in a third set match tiebreaker.

The Millikin women's tennis team followed a similar pattern that they showed during the fall season, allowing their depth to shine through. Twin sisters, Kelly Ruane/Maggie Ruane and Madeline Delano/Morgan Bettner won at number two and three doubles respectively to give the Big Blue a 2-1 lead heading into singles. After dropping the number one singles match, the Millikin women won the last five matches in straight sets. Singles wins came from Molly Angell, Paige Bequette, Maggie Ruane, Melissa Donovan, and Kelly Ruane.

"This was a great trip for both our teams," said Director of Tennis Dustin Forman. "It was really nice being able to play all of our matches at the same time and location as this allowed our men's team to cheer on the women's team and vice versa. You could definitely feel that family type atmosphere during our matches from our team."

The Big Blue will return to the courts next weekend. The women will welcome Knox College to Decatur on Saturday March 25 at 11 a.m. The next day, the men will open up College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) play with a 10 a.m. start against Carroll University at the Fairview Park Tennis Center.
