Men's Tennis Concludes Fall Invitational

Box Score The Big Blue men's tennis team concluded day two of the Millikin Fall Invitational at the Fairview Park Tennis Complex on Sunday, September 12. The day consisted of the final round of singles and one round of doubles. 

Theodor Wolf won his final singles match in Flight Two to finish in third place with a 2-1 record. Wolf defeated Carthage's Tripp Schulte 6-4, 5-7, 10-5 in the third place match. Reiss Naylor was also victorious in his final singles match to secure a 2-1 record on the weekend, defeating Jordan Sibley-Diggs of Illinois Wesleyan for third place in Flight Six. 

Clayton Maack picked up his first singles win of the fall with the defeat of Demetrios Triantafel in Flight 1, 7-5, 2-6, 10-3. 

On the doubles side, the team of Wolf and Cole Phillips bounced back from a first round loss on the first day of competition to advance to the fifth place match, first defeating Ben Hart and Justin Cassens of Augustana 8-3 before falling to another North Central squad in Guillermo Gonzalez and Andy Hinch 3-8. 

Holden Owens and Maack continued their successful partnership into day two, defeating Morgan Red and Matt Sengphommachanh of North Central 8-0 before falling in the Flight Two championship matchup to Carthage's Nicolas Welker and Tripp Schulte 8-4. 

Millikin men's tennis will travel to Kalamazoo, Mich. for the three day Men's ITA Tournament between Thurday, September 30 and Saturday, October 2 to wrap up the fall portion of their season. 

DAY ONE RECAP

The Big Blue men's tennis team competed in their first batch of matches of the 2021-22 season at the Fairview Park Tennis Complex in Decatur, Ill. on Saturday, September 11. Competition will resume on Sunday, September 12 with the final round of singles matches and two rounds of doubles matches. All but two College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin men's tennis teams participated in the tournament. 

Two newcomers to the Big Blue squad started off their collegiate careers on a high note, victorious in their first ever singles matches at MU. In Flight Two, Theodor Wolf defeated North Central's Andy Hinch 4-6, 6-1, 10-7, and in Cole Phillips beat Illinois Wesleyan's Ryan McCoy 6-4, 6-0 in Flight Three. They each will play for third place Sunday, with Wolf matching up against Tripp Schulte from Carthage and Phillips scheduled to play North Central's Matt Sengphommachanh. 

Also picking up a win in the first round of singles was Reiss Naylor. In Flight Six, Naylor defeated Augustana's Emilio Rodriguez 6-1, 6-1. Naylor will play for third place in flight six against Jordan Sibley-Diggs from Illinois Wesleyan Sunday. 

In Flight Five, James Broach dropped his first match against Zeke Cross from Illinois Wesleyan with a pair of 6-2 losses before defeating Carroll's Ian Holland 4-6, 6-1, 10-5 to put himself in the fifth place match against Jessee Dyer of Augustana. 

In Flight One, Clayton Maack played two tough opponents in Myles Krzewinski and Javier Suarez. Maack is set to match up against Demetrios Triantafel in day two of singles play. Flight Two produced a similar result for Holden Owens, and he will face North Central's Andy Hinch Sunday. Justin Caldwell and Josiah Bailey faced similar fates, and Caldwell is slated to take on Shanku Nair of Illinois Wesleyan on day two. 

The first round of doubles saw much success for the Big Blue duos. In Flight Three, Naylor and Caldwell defeated Jordan Nowell and Ben Pierson of Carroll 8-3. The Flight Two pair of Owens and Maack defeated Evan Turnbull and Justin Piotrowski of Illinois Wesleyan 8-0. Phillips and Wolf were defeated by North Central's Ramon Vilarroig and Suarez, 8-7 in a 7-3 tiebreaker.
